/students, events, features JobReady gets $50,000 grant BY MICHELLE ALEXANDER School-Community Relations Coordinator The CO A-Chowan-Gates-Perqui mans JobReady Partnership has received a $50,000 New Century grant from the North Carolina JobReady Council to implement a comprehensive model for career development. Rob Boyce, director of the JobReady initiative in Chowan County, said that the model in cludes the local, state, and national goals for JobReady; the state’s ABC plan, and the recommendations of the North Carolina Standards and Accountability Consortium. The goals focus on comprehensive ca reer development plans, work based learning, career-based se niors projects, career majors, and the development of critical employ ability competencies. “Through the support of our lo cal businesses, we have identified three critical employability competencies...Responsibility, Speaking, and Technical Writing, ” said Boyce. “Teachers have See GRANT On Page 8-B Sixth Graders show compassion Tlie Major League sixth grade team at Chowan Middle School held a contest before Thanksgiving to feather a teacher as Turkey of the Month. Students bought feathers at the cost of one cent each and chose which teacher they wanted to feather. At the end of the contest, the teacher with the most feathers was named Turkey of the Month. The sixth graders donated $50 of their profits to the Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry. Pace of Edenton, a sixth grade communication skills and social studies teacher at Chowan Middle School, recently attended a seminar at the North Carolina Center for the Advance ment of Teaching. Pace was one of 19 North Caro lina teachers participating in “Sense of Belonging: The Pursuit of At-Risk Students” Nov. 29 - Dec. 3, conducted by Tricia Cook, cen ter fellow. Part of the University of North Carolina, NCC AT provides a year round series of residential semi nars and teacher-scholar programs for teachers and professional de velopment activities for teachers and staff in selected school sys tems. Over 250 items were collected with a sixth grade class collecting the most items. The club had Allen Harless, director of the Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry, as a guest speaker. He explained how the Food Pantry works and expressed his appreciation for the club's efforts.
