well as preserving the outside in
struction areas of White Oak.”
The dining areas were also re
viewed by Smith, who informed
CCC and BOE officials that an
original design had been revised.
“Logistics was a problem in re
gard to the earlier option to share
facilities," said Smith.
Meanwhile, Cram provided in
formation on the ability to adhere
to the construction timeline.
“Preliminary estimates and
schedules show that the (plan)
meets the educational needs of the
district." said Cram. "We antici
pate the classrooms will be ready,
but the media center and the caf
eteria may not be ready...there
could be some additional work in
the support areas for 30 to 60 days.”
Cram added, '“We're very sure of
our (completion date).. .schools are
what we build, we specialize in
this area...”
However, Smith cautioned that
there two things to be sure to guard
against in regard to D.F.W.'s con
struction.
“We need this progject on bud
get ... and finished on time,” Smith
stated. “(M.B.) Kahn adds one ad
ditional factor that’s a great ben
efit, and that is that they are a
construction company as well. So
we are not left at the mercy of sub
contractors.”
Cram, while answering the ques
tion of whether or not the com
pany has exceeded deadline or over
budget, remarked, “no we never
have.”
And what could potentially be
positive news for residents, Cram
said, “yes, wre have completed some
under budget.”

EMS services of Chowan County, ’ _
Copeland remarked. “I know that
as I approach 50,1 hope that when
I call 911 that the ambulance will
be there.”
Expenditures for the upcoming
year includes a seven percent in
crease ($182,352) in current ex
pense funding for the Edenton
Chowan Board of Education (BOE).
orginally the BOE had requested
10 percent.
The BOE increase will be uti
lized to create four new personnel
positions at a cost of $155,876, pav
ing the way for an academically
gifted teacher (White Oak/D.F.
Walker); alternative learning cen
ter (D.F. Walker); band instructor
(Chowan Middle and J. A. Holmes);
and an English/Reading teacher
(J.A. Holmes).
A partial listing of other expen
ditures will focus on improve

Chowan Adult Daycare.
Awards
Continued From Page 1-A
Herald Publisher David Crawley
believes the recent awards re
ceived by Noble and Colling are a
byproduct of a great staff.
“In the short time that 1 have
been in Chowan County I have be
come thoroughly convinced that
our staff truly cafes about this com
munity and is very dedicated to
serving our readers as well as our
advertisers,” said Crawley. “I am
pleased and excited that their hard
work and dedication is being rec
ognized, especially on a statewide
level.”
According to Deborah Collins,
the responsibility to db good work
is one the staff takes very seriously.
“Creatingan advertisement that
helps increase the traffic to the
advertiser’s business is a goal we
never take lightly,” she said. “Af
ter over 18 years at The Chowan
Herald, I still get excited about be
ing able to ‘get a little creative’ in
my dealings with the advertisers
as well as the customers in our
print shop.”
Teacher

over those rough spots the first
few years.
“What school systems are see
ing nationwide is that one-third of
all new teachers will leave the pro
fession w i th in the first two to three
years. One-half of them are gone
within five years, primarily be
cause of low salaries and a per
ceived lack of support. We in the
Edenton-Chowan Schools are for
tunate enough to have a support
system that is recognized across
the state as a strong one.”
“As a teacher myself, that was
one thing I did not have, and as a
principal I saw the need for,” he
added.
North Carolina also has a paid,
three-day orientation program for
new teachers that Guard said has
been beneficial. He said the fact
that Gov. Jim Hunt has made edu
cation such a high priority of his
administration and has pushed to
raise teacher pay to the national
average has also helped, succeed
ing in raising the state to about
15th nationwide in terms of salary.
Previously, North Carolina ranked
42nd.

school system is dealing with the
teacher shortage)
