Dames Patterson wows his fans
again with Cradle and All. This

The Many Aspects of Mobile
Home Living was written by a
Virginia judge (Martin Clark)
about a fictitious North Carolina
judge (Evers Wheeling). When
Wheeling agrees to dismiss a
drug charge against a simple
minded defendant, he unwit
tingly becomes entangled in a
sequence of zany events. Called
a mix of Southern Gothic excess
and legal procedure, the author
appears to be breaking new
ground here.

DIABETES AND YOUR EYES
: Older eyes need more light
to see with. With age. the pu
.pils tend to get smaller, allow
ing less light to enter the eye
;and strike the retina. In addi
ction. the lens clouding of a de
veloping cataract may further
!block light from entering the
"eye,
Fortunately, it is possible to
I compensate to some extent by
^increasing the intensity of
'room light or moving its source
^closer for any visual tasks. For
•example, moving a lamp from
• six feet away to two feet away
• from printed material actually
increases light on the page nine
times. Ideally, light should be
directed so that it comes over
the left shoulder of a right
handed person - vice versa for
lefties — in order to avoid glare
and shadows from a pen or
pencil. In low-lighted areas,
especailly at night, it's advis
able to carry a flashlight.
Older eyes need regular op- ;
tometric examination, too, to
identify and treat any underly
ing problems.

End of Day was inspired by a
true story. Two consummate
criminals have managed to elude
arrest for thirty years, largely by
supplying information about
their Mafia enemies to the FBI,
who in turn protect them from
the Boston police. This is the last
of Higgins’ critically acclaimed
crime fiction novels. He died
suddenly just as the book was
going to press.
