Public Continued From Page 5-B tures used to stop erosion are sel dom the best solutions. Wooden bulkheads are often treated with preservatives that are toxic in the marine environment. Bulkheads reduce surrounding habitat and pollution filtering buffers, and of ten increase erosion of neighbor ing areas. “Through NCCF’s Shorekeeper Program, we have developed strat egies to halt erosion by restoring proopertv to a natural, vegetated state," said Skrabal. “I look for ward to sharing these strategies and how c it izens can protect water quality and habitat through projects and simple lifestyle changes." The Dare County Master Gar deners Association is sponsoring the program and is active among communities along the Outer Banks. Included among their projects are dune plantings, plantings for a number of commu nity nonprofits, a bluebird house project fpr fifth graders, and mem bers operate a “greenline" from the extension office which answers horticultural and agricultural questions for the public. Elva Aukland of the Dare County Master Gardeners, in explaining the group’s interest in NCCF's ShoreKeeper Program, “We are much aware of the fact that as our population grows, pressures on water availability and purity are going to become more severe. We need to take steps now to avoid major problems later. We look for ward to Tracy’s presentation and her expert advice as to what we can all do to live in harmony with our coast.” NC Coastal Federation publica tions will be available during the presentation and offered free of charge. Publications include: “ShoreKeeper Projects," a prop erty owner’s guide to projects that restore, enhance and protect coastal water quality and habitats; "Erosion Control: Non-Structural Alternatives"; and “Native Vegeta tion for ShoreKeeper Projects." a guide to recommended plants and resources. HOBY NC-East brings together a select group of young adults with groups of distinguished leaders in j business, government, education ; and the professions to discuss present and future issues. The goal is to provide the youths with a stimulating forum for learning about the American incentive sys tem and democratic process, while broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self-development. This year, students participated in thought-provoking panel discus sions and rap sessions with com munity leaders, performed com munity service in several areas, took part in leadership activities and were asked to make a 100 hour commitment to community ser vice over the next year. Popular actor Hugh O’Brian es tablished the HOBY seminar fol lowing a visit to Africa, where he was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. “One of the things Schweitzer said to me was that the most im portant thing in education was to teach young people to think for themselves,” said O’Brian. From that inspiration, and with the sup port of others who believe in youth and the American dream, I started HOBY to seek out, recognize and develop outstanding leadership potential among our nation’s youth.” Further information about HOBY activities and sponsorship opportunities is available by writ ing HOBY NC-East, PO Box 19241, * Raleigh, NC 27619.
