Perquimans County native
Earline White is serving as a sum
mer correspondent for The
Chowan Herald. She will be writ
ing feature stories for the paper.
"I love the tranquility of the
water, and so of course my favorite
spot in Chowan County is the wa

impressed with the Arts Council
arid all they do to help bring cul
tural events to the area.”
White, an honor student major
ing in English at East Carolina
University, is the daughter of
Becky White of Hertford, NC and
Bruce White of Windsor, NC. She
was an honor graduate from
Perquimans High School in 1996.
This August, she will begin her
final year of college at ECU.
“In all my work, I try to empha

have always loved the arts - litera
ture, painting, and the theatre.”
Her poetry has recently been
published in Visions, a Virginia
Beach publication.
White said that her favor ite hob

friends. On weekends for the past
three summers she has worked

She said she was “very excited”
about the opportunity The Chowan
Herald has given her.
“I am getting the chance to meet
the most interesting people,” White
said. “I love this job!”
Last week’s edition featured
White’s profile of heart transplant
survivor John Chilcoat. In today’s
edition, White takes a look at the
life of Joseph Bonifacino, a Tyner
man keeping the art of
blacksmithing alive.

Former Edentonian to develop
movie focusing on radio duo
North Carolina-based producer/
director Janet Gaino (PBS “A Vic
tory of Spirit,” “Beach Music”) has
signed a deal with popular South
ern radio celebrities John Boy and
Billy to develop and produce The
John Boy and Billy Movie, a full
length feature film. The deal not
only marks the duo’s first foray to
the big screen but the first for
Gaino and her new film produc
tion company, Bless Your Heart
Productions.
John Boy and Billy’s “The Big
Show” boasts radio listeners in 90
markets, 21 states and Japan and
is the most accessed morning pro
gram on Broadcast.com, the
Internet’s biggest provider of
streaming audio on the web. Their
laugh-a-minute comedy film will
be an action-packed blend of South
ern humor, Bubba Good Guys and
not-so-Bubba Bad Guys set against
a backdrop of radio broadcasting,
wrestling and NASCAR racing.
Gaino, best known for her tele
vision work in children’s series,
music videos, documentaries and
commercials, has been exploring
the feature film industry in North
Carolina for the past year.
“Of all the projects that I have
been looking at, this is the first
feature film project that I’ve been
really excited about producing,”
said Gaino. “John Boy and Billy
have a huge fan base and strong
ties to NASCAR and wrestling.
That, plus the fact that they are
very, very funny already gives this
project a lot of potential.
“Since this is our first movie,”
said radio personality Billy James,
“we wanted to put a real top-notch
creative team together.”
“We’ve been talking about it for
a long time,” added John (Boy)
Isley, “and we’re excited that Janet
has moved it from that stage - talk
ing, that is - to being officially in
development.”
JeffPillars, Joe Dattore and Billy
James have written a first draft of
a script. Name talent will be ap
proached to portray some of the
characters, and wrestling and
NASCAR celebrities will appear
in cameos. John Boy and Billy will
star as themselves. Several top
notch directors are being ap
proached to head the project. The
John Boy and Billy Movie is ex
pected to go before the cameras in
spring 2001.
Janet Gaino grew up in Edenton
and is the sister of Edenton resi
dents Gloria Willis and Joyce
Jones.

Chesson said that he was very
proud to own the Josephine Napo
leon Leary building, built in 1894,
which is home to Chowan County’s
newspaper.
“When I saw how vibrant the
downtown area of Edenton was, I
have to admit I was somewhat en
vious of those who are lucky
enough to live here,” he said.
“The Herald building is just
great,” he said. “It has a lot of char
acter, and that’s something we
definitely don’t want to lose. While
everything will look fresh and
new, at the same time, we want to
preserve the budding’s historic
character.” \__
Chesson noted that his crews
are purchasing as many of their
supplies locally as possible, from
businesses like M.G. Brown and
Sherwin-Williams.
“We’re trying to do everything
we can locally,” he said. “Wethink
that’s very important.”
Chesson noted that as is often
the case with older buildings, there
is some rotten wood around win
dow moldings and such that will
have to be replaced. And, he said,
the building would be “brought up
the code.”
At present, the crews are work
ing upstairs at the newspaper and
