Applications for substitute teaching must be secured from the Edenton office of the NC Employ ment Security Commission (ESC) located in the Edenton Village Shopping Center. Deadline for re turning applications to ESC is Thursday, June 29. ESC’s phone number is 482-2195. According to John Guard, direc tor of Human Resources for the Edenton-Chowan Schools, “Substi tute teachers provide an impor tant service to the school district by covering classes whose regular teachers are away from school be cause of illness or professional training requirements. We are al ways loojfing for dedicated indi viduSts*who are willing to serve in this important role. “We encourage persons who want to help make a difference in the lives of young people to con sider substitute teaching as an option. Retirees and homemakers who seek part-time work are indi viduals who have proved to be suc cessful in the substitute teacher role.” “Completion of a 30 clock hour Effective Teach ing Training (ETT) workshop is a prerequisite to be coming a substitute teacher,” said Guard. Effective Teaching Training is scheduled at the Edenton campus of College of the Albemarle from July 10-14. Registration will be held on the first day of class, starting at 8 a.m. A registration fee of $50 is required for those attending the workshop. “In addition to submitting a writ ten application and successfully completing ETT, a substitute teacher candidate will be required to be interviewed, to pass a crimi nal background check and a per sonal reference check,” Guard added. “Classroom observations will be required before a candi date is approved as a substitute teacher. “ Substitute teacher candidates must hold at least a high school diploma and some college training is preferred. Guard noted that substitute teachers are paid at a “predeter mined daily rate of pay. Substitute teacher pay is based on an individual’s level of training and preparation. “Those who hold or have previ ously held a teaching license are paid at a higher rate than those who do not hold a teaching license. ” . Guard said that for the 1999-2000 school year the daily rates were $71 and $57 respectively. “Based upon legislative action, both rates are scheduled to increase slightly for the 2000-2001 school year.
