Budget
Continued From Page 1-A
education, a public safety fund
base of $3.1 million, and human
services award $3.8 million.
Meanwhile, county revenues,
which are projected to be approxi
mately $20.7 million, receives its
largest contributions from a $7.1
million federal/state fund and $6.2
million county tax pool.
Next year’s proposed budget di
rects $3.7 million toward Social
Services and $333,141 for county
administration, both dropoffs
1 from the previous year.
While referencing a North Caro1
lina Institute of Government re
port, Sams questioned the appro
priateness of County Manager
Cliff Copeland’s salary, which will
be,increased during the 2000-01 fis
cal year.
“Chowan County now pays a
higher salary...than any other
Albemarle area coutny, even in
cluding Dare County, which has
twice the population and seven
times the property tax base,” he
stated. “The question is not
whether Mr. Copeland does a good
job... the issue is what is the fair
compensation in the eastern North
Carolina job market.”
Commissioners Wayne Good
win and George Jones quickly
countered Sams' comments.
“...In order to get the best run
county (system), you’ve got to pay
the money,” stated Goodwin.
“There’s no commissioner in
our area, that could have done
what our county manager has
done..no one, no where,” Jones
said. “We have something that no
other county has.”
