. trip to help Hondurans
Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal
Church in Edenton are planning a
mission trip to Honduras to help
build houses for families who lost
everything to the raging flood wa
ters caused by Hurricane Mitch in
1998.
High winds and torrential rains
lashed Central America, leaving
about 9,000 dead and thousands of
others missing in Honduras alone.
Crops were destroyed, bridges and
roads washed away and thousands
of people were left homeless.
The trip, which is scheduled for
Oct. 12-22, will, cost about $1,000
per person, with $551 designated
for a round-trip ticket on Conti
nental Airlines, and the balance
for food, lodging, medical insur
ance and miscellaneous expenses.
Thus far about 10 members of St.
Paul’s have agreed to make the
trip and there is still room £or oth
ers to take part in it. Slots for 20
volunteers have been reserved in
Honduras and members of other
churches are invited to participate.
“It has been almost two years
since theflooding devastated much
of Honduras and there are still
thousands of families living in
tents or in makeshift hovels made
of tin and cardboard,” said the Rev.
Alfonzo A. Narvaez, trip coordina
tor. “We hope to make a difference
in their lives.”
He added that the Episcopal
Church in Honduras, with the fi
nancial support of the Episcopal
Church’s Presiding Bishop’s Fund
for World Relief, has purchased
land and has developed plans for a
200-h.ouse community in San Pedro
Sula, just north ofthecapital. Since
the project was started in June
1999, 60 dwellings have been built
and are being occupied by former
flood victims.
