Ribbon-cutting held Several local officials, including Chowan County Commissioner Louis Belfield, Mayor Rolanc Vaughan, Edenton town councilman Jimmy Stallings, and Edenton-Chowan School Board Superintendent Dr. Allan Smith were on hand to help celebrate the recent grand opening of the Sherwin-Williams store. The facility, which was formerly known as Nixon's Paint Store, is located at 817 N. Broad Street. With all the accolades bestowed upon the NSYTLC, there was still a question as to whether or not Nugen would attend—at least ini tially. “I told my mom that I didn’t know how I was going to pay,” said Nugen. “But my mom said you need to go. And my dad’s reflections were about the same.” Employed for the past 18 months at Jimbo Jumbo’s, Nugen received ass istance from Jumbo’s corporate office (Morven Partners), in addi t tion to support from staff at the local plant. “To the employees of Jimbo Jumbo’s, I would like to say thanks,” he said. “I would like to say, thank you, to them person ally.” Nugen also describes'the gener ous nature of his co-workers, not just in this situation, but on an everyday basis. “I’ve been here for one and a hall years, and it’s been pretty fun,” Nugenremarked. “Ifyou ever need something, they will do it.” As to exactly how Nugen real ized that he had been nominated for the program is a pretty unique story. “I went to the post office and there was a yellow slip of paper,” he said “At the time I was thinking that (JAH guidance counselor Allison; Tibbetts had nominated me, soor after that I told my mom. From there I passed the requirements ... anc being a rising senior, I was defi nitely interested in the program.” He admits that maintaining £ Senior packets available Senior packets are now available at John A. (currently listed as 3.3), takes dedication, which is a trait that can be traced back to an early age. “Ever since I was little, my dad said never do a job half(way),” Nugen said. “Therefore, when they tell me to do something here (at Jumbo’s), I do it. I also never ask for time off, except when I go on church trips.” But it is not all work and no play for Nugen, evidenced by the follow ing description regarding a trio of co-workers. “Brent (Holt), Scott (Castelloe), and Quinton (McGowan) joke aroundalot/’hestated. “With those guys it’s never a dull moment around here.” But back to the issue at hand, which is the NSYLTC and all the experiences that it could provide for this local resident. “As you can see, this 11-day sum mit has a lot to offer and is a once in a lifetime opportunity," Nugen said. “I am sure that.i.I will represent our community well, while learn ing how to prepare for a future (that will be) full of technological ad vances.” Tract Continued From Page 1-A “We thought we had died and gone to heaven,” he said. Dr. Pridgen said he was disturbed to see the Council considering a plan that might bring the same ur ban sprawl to Edenton that he had witnessed in other communities. “Just look at Plymouth, Ahoskie, and Williamston...what happened to them happened because their leaders made poor decisions.” Pridgen added that he would en courage the Edenton Town Coun cil to use “prudent, controlled deci sion-making” and to remember that their decision “will impact that which we cherish.” But in the end, most of the Coun cilmen were not swayed by what they heard at the meeting. Several said they had heard from a number of their constituents who were not at the meeting, urging them to vote in favor of the rezoning. Councilman Jerry Parks said that he had heard the argument that “Downtown’s going to die” on a number of other occasions and that had not proved to be the case. “We heard that when Colonial Motor Company (a former down town car dealership) closed its doors, downtown was going to die. Then, we heard it again when Har ris Shopping Center opened its doors. Downtown did not die.” Parks, a native of the commu nity, noted that he had witnessed many changes as businesses came and went over the years, and said that change is an inevitable part of life. “I’ve seen lots of things change,” he said, “but I feel comfortable that our downtown is going to remain viable. If you look at what makes sense, that property for all intents and purposes, should be zoned com mercial.” Parks voted in favor of the pro posal, as did Councilmen Willis Privott, Jimmy Stallings, and Jerald Perry. Councilman Biggs, while not present and therefore not allowed to cast a vote, did send a letter of support for the rezoning of the land, which was read into the minutes of the meeting at his re quest.
