Anne Rivers Siddons’ latest is at library The Indwelling: The Beast Takes' Possession by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins is the latest in the best selling Left Behind Christian fic tion series. The seventh book chronicles the tribulations of those remaining on earth after the Rap ture: From Anne Rivers Siddons, „ Nora. Nora (with a pink Thun der bird convertible on the cover) features two cousins in a small Georgia town in the early sixties. One is living a fairly lonely life until the other arrives, ruffling local feathers when she teaches the first integrated honors class at the high school. One reviewer called the story a mix of delicacy and Southern discomfort. . Omertci by Mario Puzo completes his Godfathersaga. The Aprile fam ily is making the transition from organ ized crime to the beginnings of legitimate business. They still have too high a profile, however, to escape the attention of the FBI and ultimately they are drawn into one last war. Omerta is Sicilian for the code of silence, that kept' •veil rival Mafiosi from ratting on each other. Victoria Gotti, real-life Mafia daughter and novelist offers a Hol lywood thriller Super’Star. Two girls, one with all of life's privi leges and the other with very few. aspire to stardom and meet as they climb the ladder to fame. The twist re switched at birth. Two mysteries: McNally’s Folly Check ROSALIE BOYD with Florida detective Archy McNally was written by Vincent Lardo in the style of the series origi nator, the late Lawrence; Sanders. When Archy gets involved with the Palm Beach Community Theater, the back-stage action mirrors the deadly on-stage plot. Shakespeare’s Trollop by Charlaine Harris takes place in a small Arkansas town where cleaning woman amateur sleuth Lily Bard can out-detect the local police any day. James Grippando's Under Cover of Darkness concocts a chilling story in a Seattle lawyer's family. When his wife disappears. Gus Wheatley fears the worst - that she was abducted and may be dead. Then the police find evidence that leads them to believe she not only left voluntarily, but also that she went as an accomplice to a serial killer. On Secret Service by John Jakes begins as the Secret Service is or ganized during the Civil War. The characters are closely linked with historical figures: Allan Pin kerton, John Wilkes Booth. George McClellan, Jeb Stuart and, of course, Abraham Lincoln. Most of the action takes place around Washington, D.C. where intrigue is rampant and politics are vola tile. Jakes is getting good reviews for an engrossing read and an ex cellent depiction of the period. . The China Bride by Mary Jo Putney' is a good, old-fashioned historical romance with well-de veloped characters and interest ing background material. Set in the 1830s, a young titled English man wants to travel into the inte rior of China, an area forbidden to foreigners. Elaborately disguised and with the help of a native guide, he sets out. But the guide is woman dressed as a man and. well, you know the rest. An earlier book by Putney, The Wild Child, introduces the English family. Gravesend Light by David Payne takes place in a Wanchese-type fishing village on the Outer Banks where traditional thinking and outside ideas collide and simmer to boiling. An anthropologist re treats to his family's summer cot tage and takes a job on a fishing boat. He meets and falls for a Yale trained OB-GYN resident whose ideas are not widely accepted. The descriptions are excellent and do not have the feel of the Outer Banks.. There’s a harrowing fish ing trip when the boat is caught in a storm. Looks to be a really good read. Beyond the Gathering Storm by Janette Oke continues the story of Henry and Christine, raised as brother and sister by the Delaneys. Now young adults, Henry is a mem ber of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Christine moves to Edmonton to find her first job. Get Happy: The Life of Judy Gar land, again examines the tragic life of this well-known personal ity. Beginning with extensive back ground material and concluding with d description of the funeral attended by 22,000, author Gerald Clarke seeks to reveal new infor mation about the star whose life was a series of crises. From Dawn to Decadence: 1500to the Present is on the non-fiction best-seller list, no mean feat for a history book. Although the author believes we have been in a period of cultural retreat, he also believes it to be part of a natural cycle and that a surge of great creativity will follow. Dor ling Kindersley’s Complete Sailing Manual is lavishly illus trated with sidebars, diagrams and color photographs for sailors of all levels of experience.
