Radcliff Reel of Elizabeth City, Lt. Governor of Division 16, Carolinas District of Kiwanis International, was on hand to install the new officers and di rectors. Walter Harrell takes over as club president Oct. 1, succeed ing Jack Kenealy. Tom Gard moves up to the post of presi dent-elect, and Larry McLaughlin is the new vice president. Mary Dockery will serve the club as secretary, and Doug Johnson continues in his job of club treasurer. Three members were named to serve on the board of direc tors. Greg Bonner, Jim Carnrite, and John Perkins will serve bn the board until 2003. Continuing on the board are Willie Boone, Jim Carr, Karen Molloy, and Cris Reynolds. Mary Dockery and Gil Johnson stepped down as board mem bers, with terms ending Sept. 30. Jim Huskins, Danielle Morrison, and Marge Soper were recognized as new club members. Gil Johnson received the award as Kiwanian of the Year, recognizing his service and leadership. Earl Bassett re ceived the Hixson award for club service. Representatives of the Key Club at John A. Holmes High School also attended the ban quet. One of the community ser vice projects of the Edenton Chowan Kiwanis Club is spon sorship of the local Key Club. Mary Gavalas, retiring Lt. Gavalas, a Corolla, NC realtor, announced her plans to run for the office of Gover nor of the Carolinas District, which includes all of the Kiwanis Clubs in North and South Carolina. The 35 members of the Edenton-Chowan Kiwanis Club focus their efforts on serving the youth of the community by funding scholarships for local high school graduates, sponsor ship of the Key Club at Holmes High School, offering the Ter rific Kids program at D.F. Walker Elementary School, and its “Shots for Tots" program wifh the Chowan County Health Department. The club also supports the community through a highway cleanup pro gram and annual plantings of crepe myrtle trees in public areas of Edenton. It also sup ports Kiwanis International’s worldwide project to eliminate iodine deficiency disorder (IDD). The fundraising programs of the local Kiwanis Club include its Fish Fry, usually held in the spring, the Big Spring Rum mage Sale, and year-round sales of its Historic Edentori medallions. Club members are currently selling chances at $1 each for a “$1,000 Shopping Spree” drawing to be held on Oct. 20.
