OBITUARIES /funerals, memorial services WILLIE L. BOYCE JAMAICA, NY - Mr. Willie Lee Boyce was bom in Chowan County on July 8.1934 to the late Willie and Lillie Bell Boyce. He departed this life on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Ja maica Hospital in Jamaica, NY. "Little Buddy,” as he was fondly called by his family and friends, joined in fellowship with the White Oak Baptist Church at an early age and later relocated to New York. He leaves to cherish his memory a son. Jason Williams; a grand child, Jason Jr.; a very special friend, Mildred Roberson; five sis ters, Mrs. Madie Pope of Suffolk. Edenton. died Satur day morning. Oct. 7. at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. He was born in Dover. NJ, son oi the late Thomas and May Ford Dehler and was the husband oi Margaret Grimes Dehler."who sur vives. He was a retired general con tractor. a member of Acacia Ma sonic Lodge #20 in Dover. NJ: a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple, New Bern, NC, and a vet eran of the US Army with service during the Korean War. Besides his wife. Mr. Dehler is survived by a daughter. A native of Norfolk, VA, he was the retired president of Jimbo’s Jumbos Peanut Company. He was a retired captain in the U.S. Coast Guard and a private pilot. Mr. Gard mananged Seaboard Citizens National Bank, served on the board of Chowan Hospital, the Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce, Edenton Airport and Chowan Golf and Country Club. He was an anonymous benefactor to many and a great friend to all. Mr. Gard attended Valley Forge Military Academy and graduated from the College of William and Mary. ’ Besides his wife, Betty Jean Whitehurst Gard, survivors in clude: a daughter, Deborah G. Sims of Virginia Beach, VA; a son, Carl Gard of Virginia Beach, VA; three brothers, Thomas S. Gard of Vir ginia Beach. VA, Ernest B. Gard of Nags Head, NC and Walter R. Reed of Williamsburg, VA; four grand children, Joshua Anderson, Chelsea Gard, Grady Sims, Scarlett Sims, all of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews. GRAHAM Mrs. Dorothy Ann Cummings Graham, 87, of 120 West King St., Edenton, died Thursday, Oct. 5 at her home, The Wessington House. A native of Omaha, NE, Mrs. Graham was the daughter of the late Frank Lorenzo and Catherine Hough Cummings and the wife of the late John Washington Graham. Mrs. Graham was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a charter member of the Edenton Woman’s Club. She was a gradu ate of Stanford University, a US Navy veteran and taught high school History. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Graham Rowe of Edenton; two sons, Dr. John Washington Graham Jr. of Durham, NC and Donald Cummings Graham of Bluffton, SC; and four grandchil dren, Emily Cameron Rowe of Edenton, Alexander Cummings Graham and Anna Catherine Gra ham, both of Bluffton, SC and Michaela Marie Graham of Durham, NC. A celebration of Mrs. Graham’s life was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Thomas Rickenbaker officiating. Burial followed in Bea ver Hill Cemetery. VERNON L JERKINS Vernon Lee Jerkins, 80, of 1306 Vann St., Edenton, died Sept. 29 at Chowan Hospital. A native of Chowan ^County, he was a son of the late Aleathia R. Jerkins and Emmanuel W. Jer kins, and the husband of Marie B. Jerkins, who survives. Mr. Jerkins was a member of the Greater Welch’s Chapel Baptist Church in Tyner, NC. Besides his wife, survivors in clude: four daughters, Ellinor Prasident of Boston, MA, Mary A. Walker and Doris J. Hurdle, and Valerie J. Patrick, all of Edenton; two step-brothers, David Freeman of Colerain, NC and Henry Whitehurst of Elizabeth City, NC; three step-sisters, Mary Freeman of Ahoskie, NC, Lillian Cherry of Colerain, NC and Missouri Drake of Harrellsville, NC; eight grand children; and five great-grandchil dren. A funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. at Greater Welch’s Chapel Baptist Church in Tyner, NC. Burial fol lowed at the church cemetery. She was a na tive of Washington County, NC and the firstborn of the late Mark E. and Dora Biggs Leary. She is survived by two sisters, Helen Parker of Virginia Beach, VA and Beatrice Trace of Chesa peake, VA; and three brothers, Charles Leary of Ocala, FL, Phillip Leary of Raleigh, NC and Carl Leary of Elizabeth City, NC. He was a farmer and had taught farming and livestock to veterans in Perquimans, Pasquotank and Currituck counties. He was an ac tive member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as teacher of the Clarence Phillips Sunday School Class for 40 years. He had served as a deacon, Brotherhood. president and on several of the church committees. Mr. Long served for 20 years on the Perquimans County School Board, was a member of the Perquimans Masonic Lodge #106, Order of the Eastern Star #302, Bethel Ruritan Club, American Legion Post #126, AARP Chapter 4118 and Mended Hearts. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. Besides his wife, Madelyn Phillips Long, survivors include: a daughter, Ellen L. Thomas of Rocky Mount, NC; two grandchil dren, Stephen Thomas and Lauren Thomas, both of Rocky Mount; and a half-sister. He was predeceased by a sister, Lucille L. White, a brother, Edgar Long, and his step mother, Marine Long. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Swindell Funeral Home Chapel.
