Heritage honored
A proclamation by Edenton Mayor Roland Vaughan and the
Edenton Town Council was issued recently. The proclamation
declares October 2000 as Colonial Heritage Month and encourages
exploration, knowledge and appreciation of colonial history and

Education
funds have
been Ok’d
for program
The Albemarle Learning Center,
131 Morristown Road. Edenton, has
been awarded a $104,000 grant for
distance learning through the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s Ru
ral Utilities Service Program.
Learning Center Director Jake
Boyce said the center was very
pleased to be the' recipient of this
important financial support.
“This grant will expand our ca
pacity to share educational oppor
tunities relating to farm life, folk
art, history and science with our
partner school systems and with
adult residents in our community,”
he said. “Using new technology,
students and families will be able
to access information, classes, and
workshops that will-significantly
enrich their educations.”

Grant paves way
for community
center at Tyner

TYNER, NC—On Wednesday,
Oct. 18, an inconspicuous tract of
land situated adjacent to Chowan
Middle School became ground zero
as representatives from the
Edenton-Chowan Recreation De
partment (ECRD), county commis
sioners office and several other
local officials joined forces to an
nounce the impending construc
tion of a 24,000 square foot Chowan
Community Center.
Those in attendance relayed that
the structure that will offer nu
merous recreational activities for
county residents.
“With this addition to our parks
and recreation department, many
people will be able to participate in
our tennis program,” said county
commissioner Harry'L. Winslow.
“We’re here to break ground for a
facility that’s been long awaited.
And by working together we can
achieve much for the citizens of
Chowan County.”
Board of Education (BOE) presi
dent, Glorious Elliott also ad
dressed the importance of the fa
cility.
“It will be used for athletic as
well as cultural events,” Elliott
said. “It will also enable our boys
and girls...and men and women to
come together.”
Elliott also discussed the coop
erative nature of the project.
“Thank you for the vision, per
severance, and hard work...in un
dertaking this monumental
tas'k.” she said.
ECRDd irector Robbie Laughton
addressed the funding received
from the N.C. Parks and Recre
ation Trust Fund- which allocated
250K to the project.
“They've already given us that
check,” he said, "but we would be
glad for (them) to give us another

‘Rhythm in Blue’ to perform here on November 17
Group serves as
jazz ensemble for
US Heritage Band
The United States Air Force
(USAF) Rhythm in Blue Jazz En
semble will be in concert on Fri
day, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the
Chowan Arts Council (CAC).
Based at Langley Air Force
Base in .Virginia, the group is
currently on tour in the area and
serves as the official jazz en
semble of the USAF Heritage of
America Band.
The 18-member ensemble per
forms the best in jazz music from
the classics of Duke Ellington,
Fletcher Henderson, Count
Basie, Stan Kenton, and Glenn
Miller to the exciting sounds of
artists like Pat Metheny, Toshiko
Akioshi, and Bob Mintzer for
over 50,000 people each year.
The group has also produced
numerous recordings, including
their highly acclaimed Rockin’
in Rhythm Cl), a tribute to Duke
Ellington and a recent video hon
oring the great Glenn Miller
titled Air Combat Command Re
members Glenn Miller. The band
frequently features artists, in
cluding recent performances
with Louie Belison, Marv
Stamm, and the New York
Voices.
The program, sponsored by the
CAC, The Chowan Herald and
the American Legion Post 40 in
Edenton, is open to the public
with free tickets available at the
CAC and The Chowan Herald.

resulted in the death of Joseph
Edward Hall, 23, ofTyner, NC.
According to a N.C. High
way Patrol report, a 1995
Chevy Cavalier driven by Hall
was struck at approximately
6:25 p,m„ 1/10 of a mile from
the Gates County (N.C.) line.
Two additional vehicles
were involved in the incident,
a 1997 Ford Explorer which
was operated by Ronnie Allen
