Participants are invited to read from their favorite works by and about African Americans. Selections can be fiction, non-fiction, funny or inspirational and intended for children or adults. All ages are welcome, so plan to read with us or come to listen. John Grisham's fans no doubt already know that he has just published a new book. You may also know that A Painted House is not a legal thriller, but is a story about a boy growing up on a farm in Arkansas. Grisham’s early ambition was to be a profes sional baseball player, thus the baseball interest in the story. This factual account is replete with illustrations and maps, and the text brings the historical characters of Raleigh. Elizabeth, and others into the reach of the reader. Gobs Grief in Chris Adrian’s title is for a twin . brother, a twelve-year-old bugler killed in the early days of the Civil War. The adult Gob develops an obsession that manifests itself in the building of a time machine that will bring back all the 620,000 war dead. Walt Whitman and Victoria Woodhull are among the real people with parts in this inventive novel written by a Virginia med student. In A Darkness More Than Night by Michael Connelly, FBI agent Terry McCaleb and Detective Harry Bosch are back and one of them is a murder suspect. This book gets a highly recommended review from Publishers Weekly. Murder with Puffins by Donna Andrews takes place on a tiny island off the coast of Maine where Meg and Michael plan to take a romantic vacation. But when they arrive at their cottage, they find Meg’s parents awaiting them with the news that her father has been charged with murder. Molly is a children’s book author who falls in love with a handsome pro football quarterback in This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. There is a lot of negative yardage before the two cross the finish line. It looks like a good contempo rary romance. From Stewart ONan, Everyday People looks at a black neighborhood during one week in 1989 and the residents struggles with poverty and gang violence. From a focus on the Tolbert family to the broader commu nity of Pittsburgh, ONan gives faces and stories to an urban landscape. Christian fiction: The Visitation by Frank Peretti (Angel sightings and super natural events bring big changes to a small town.) and Distant Memory by Alton L. Gansky (A woman with amnesia does not know whom to trust in this sus penseful story.). New audiotapes are Songs in Ordinary Times by Mary McGarry Morris, Net Force: Breaking Point by Tom Clancey, Blood and Smoke by Stephen King and Anything Considered by Peter Mayle. The King book (written for audio alone and read by the author) consists of three , suspense stories in which cigarette smoking is a key element.
