Among those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Gil Johnson of Edenton. Mr. Johnson served as a com bat medic during the Battle of the Bulgb, the Ardonnes and later during the occupation of Europe.' He received several commen dations, including the Combat Medics Badge and Bronze Star while serving his country. '“Although we are losing thousands of veterans of World War II every day,” Johnson’s wife noted, “these men of the 8th remain strong in their de votion to these reunions. So they come with canes, walkers and oxygen tanks but with high spirits and strong friendships. ” Former Sergeant Johnson also had the opportunity dur ing the reunion to meet with his lieutenant, Lt. Reed, whom Spivey to serve as chairman The board of directors of North Carolina’s Northeast Partnership has elected Rob ert “Bob” Spivey as chairman for the 2001-2002 fiscal year. Also appointed as officers were Jack Runion of Halifax County as vice-chairman; Elsie Hollowell-Pugh of Camden, as secretary; and O.S. “buck” Suiter Jr. of Ahoskie as trea surer. “I am honored to have re ceived the vote of confience by my fellow board members to lead the Northeast Partnership board of directors,” said Spivey. “I serve with a fine group of men and women who truly care about the future of northeastern North Carolina. With their dedication and com mitment, I am confident we can continue to work toward the grwoth and prosperity this re gion deserves.” Spivey, who serves as mayor of Windsor, NC and chairman of the Bertie County Economic Development Commission, is also a former Bertie County Commissioner. In addition to serving on the board of direc tors of the Northeast Partner ship, he also serves as co-chair of Partnership for the Sounds. He was appointed to the North Carolina Rural Prosperity Task Force in 1999. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Sherry Warren and Mr. John Patrick of Overton, NV. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wade Phelps of Creswell, NC and Mrs. Rena Patrick and the late Abie J. Patrick of Creswell. The groom is the son of Mrs. Fran Matchell and the late Chub Matchell of Edenton and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Holt of ~ Durham, NQ. He is the grand- . son of Maggie Jones of , Durham, NC and the late Mr. and Mrs. Grady Vaughan. The bride is employed as a sales representative at Sears in Elizabeth City, NC. Dr. Reed happened to have trav eled the longest distance to at tend the reunion and received a plaque honoring him for that. He is a robust, cheerful 81-year old retired OB-GYN specialist. Others attending came from Wisconsin, Oregon, and Ohio, as well as other states. There were some new faces, and some old faces. Welcoming the 8th Armored Division was Paul Fruim, Mayor of Norfolk. Steve Johnson gave a power ful rendition of “God Bless America” and the “Star Spangled Banner,” which de lighted the audience. Chaplain Charles Fix enter tained with a collection of hu morous stories which were enthusiastically received. Thirteen chartered buses were used to transport mem bers to Williamsburg, tours of Norfolk and included visits to Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin.
