OB!TUAR!ES -.-—— L.D. "S!MON" CHAPPELL WINTERVILLE, NC - L.D. "Simon" Chappeii, 91, formerly of Hertford, NC, died Friday, Aug. 10, in Pitt Memorial Hos pital, Greenville, NC. A native of Perquimans County, he was the widower of Tallew Copeland Chappell and the son of the late George Wash ington and Rosa Burke Chappell. He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the Hertford Bap tist Church and Woodmen of the World. Survivors include: two daughters, Anne Burke C. Wil son of Silver Bay, NY and Mary Dow Chappell of Winterville; two sisters, Mabel Orr of Robbinsville, NC and Betty Ruth Lupkin of GA; three grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Swindell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Ce dar Wood Cemetery in Hertford. COX William Dennis "Bill" Cox, 80, longtime mayor of Hertford, NC, of the 1600 block of Lane's Landing Road, Tyner, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, in his home. Mr. Cox was born in Perquimans County and was the son of the late Dennis B. and Mrs. Nellie Hoskins Cox. Elected to the Hertford Town Council in 1967, Mr. Cox served in that capacity until being elected Mayor in 1971. Serving as mayor for 20 years, he also held the position of Town Man ager for 22 years. During his five terms as mayor he was involved in de veloping the Missing Mill Park, organizing a Senior Citizens Program and securing funds for a building to house the se nior citizens activities. He was instrumental in acquiring many federal grants for hous ing improvements throughout the town. Serving on many boards and committees throughout the area, he was most recognized as its chair man for two years. The North Carolina Depart ment of Transportation, in rec ognition of this service, dedi cated the section of Highway 17 from the Pasquotank County line to the Chowan County iine as the W.D. "Bill" Cox High way. And in 1985, Governor James B. Hunt Jr. presented Mayor Cox the "Order of the Long Leaf Pine," the Governor's highest honor. For 31 years prior to the mayor and town manager po sitions, Mr. Cox was the owner and operator of the One Stop Service Station in Hertford. He was a past president of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the American Legion, a member of Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church in Tyner, and had served in the Army Air Force during World War H. Besides his devoted and lov ing wife, Shirley Harrell Cox; four daughters, Pam Roberson, Susan Cox, Tara Russell Lane and her husband, Johnny; and LaWanda Russell Hollowell and her husband, Johnny; four sons, Gary Russell and his wife, Angela; Keith Russell and his wife, Pam; Giles H. Russell and his wife, Sherry; and Steve Russell and his wife, Beverly; one brother, Thomas A. Cox; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. They all gave him much joy and he will be missed by all. A memorial service was held Thursday, Aug. 9, at 4 p.m. in Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church by the Rev. John Wilkinson. To honor his re quest, his body has been cre mated. The family asks that contri butions be made to the Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church, Tyner, NC 27980 for use in the Family Life Center. JORDAN HERTFORD, NC - Aivis Riddick Jordan, 91, formerly of Hertford, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, in Cypress Gien Retirement Home, Greenviiie, NC. A native of Gates County, NC she was the widow of George Weidon Jordan and the daugh ter of the iate Nathaniel Jones and Jayney Martin Riddick. She retired from the Employ ment Security Commission in Raleigh as a district supervi sor. She was a member of the Hertford United Methodist Church and its Minnie Wilson Circle, had served as a Docent with the Newbold-White House; a member of the Snug Harbor Property Owners As sociation and the Extension Homemakers Club. She was survived by two sis ters, Naomi R. Powell of Middlesex, NC and Frances R. Jacobs of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, Alfred Moore Riddick of Norfolk, VA and Harry S. Riddick of Colerain, NC. She was predeceased by three brothers, Richard Henry Riddick, Nathaniel Thomas Riddick and Sidney Wood Riddick. A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 11. in the Hertford United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Gatesville Cemetery. The daugh ter of the late Richard Lee and Velara Stowers, she was a re tired waitress and had moved to Edenton from the Kempsville section of Norfolk, VA. Surviving are her husband, Eldon P. Reynolds, and a sis ter, Gladys Sights of Toronto, OH. A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 13, at 2 p.m. in Bandon Chapel Church by the Rev. E.L. Earnhardt, pastor. SM!TH EDEN, NC - Mrs. Helen Jones Huffines Smith, 97, of Stonesville, died Saturday, Aug. 4. A native of Chowan County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the iate Lillie Evans and Herbert B. Jones. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gordon Huffines, and her second hus band, William Clarence Smith. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Stonesville Christian Church. She is survived by her step son, William "Bill" Smith of Horsepasture, VA; a nephew, Bill Vogedes of Edenton; sis ter-in-law, Nellie Jones of Edenton; four step-grandchil dren; and eight step-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her son, Gordon Huffines Jr.; two sisters, Sally Mae J. Stone and Ernestine Jones Vogedes; her brother, W.P. "Spec" Jones; and her daughter-in-law, Marian Hufilnes. She was born in Nicanor, NC to the late Percy Emmitt Winslow and the late Nora P. White Winslow. Mrs, Stallings retired in 1981 afteryt years as a business and vocational teacher with the Perquimans County school system and later retired from New York Life Insurance Company after 20 years as a sales representative. She received her bachelor's degree and masters of art de gree from East Carolina Uni versity, Greenville, NC, was a member of the Pi Omega Pi Business Honorary Fraternity, and a faithful member of the Hertford Baptist Church. Mrs. Stallings is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Lewis H. Stallings of the home; two loving daughters, LuAnn Stallings Riddick and husband Philip of Belvidere and Lynn Renee Stallings Jordan and husband Brad of Hertford; two brothers, Percy L. Winslow and wife Leona of Belvidere and Burwell R. Winslow and wife Alvis of Suffolk, VA; a darling grandson, Blake Lewis Jordan of Hertford.
