JAHHS girls tennis team
has juniors leading the way
Former Holmes
coach returns
to lead team
with high hopes
for good season
BY MARY SAWYER
Correspondent
Expectations are high for
this very young but very tal
ented group of tennis players
that make up the JAHHS girls
tennis team.
Although eight of the nine
girls on the team are returning
from last year's conference
championship team, none are
seniors. That puts the leader
ship role on the racquets of jun
iors Brittany Bloom, Leslie
Burns, Francie Harrell, and
Rebecca Parrish.
The other four returning
players are sophomores Emily
Boehling, Lauren Chesson,
Elizabeth Edmundson, and
Erin Potocki. New to the team
are freshman Sarah Proctor
and manager Jessica Nixon.
Also new to the team are head
coach Dr. Allen Hornthal and
his assistant coaches Kermit
Nixon and Mary Sawyer.
While all three bring to the
team many years of playing
and teaching experience, only
Dr. Hornthal can boast years
of coaching experience, hav
ing coached at John A. Holmes
in the mid-eighties and more
recently at Lawrence Acad
emy.

rials (toys) available and ac
cessible to the children? (It is
not enough for there to be toys
if the children cannot get the
toys themselves.)
(7) What is your policy for
care of sick children?
(8) May I observe some of
the classrooms in your cen
ter?
(9) If I choose your center/
home, can I stop by and check
on my child anytime?
(10) What is the cost?
After prospective providers
answer these questions, sched
ule a time to observe the facil
ity and classrooms. Before you
visit, develop a list of ques
tions based upon your obser
vations. The following is a list
of possible questions:
(1) Are the children's basic
needs being met?
(2) Is there a lot of noise?
Positive noise? Laughing and
playing? Or, negative noise?
Crying, yelling, screaming?
(3) Are classrooms orga
nized, clean and tidy? Are toys
and furniture in good repair?
(4) Are caregivers' attitudes,
actions and voices positive?
(5) is there a balance of play
time and quiet time? Talking
and listening?
(6) Are the children happy?
(7) What is my instinct about
this facility and its caregivers?
When observing a childcare
center or home, remember to
use your senses. What do you
see, hear, smell and feel?
Not every childcare facility
is right for every parent and/
orchild. Go with your instincts.
If you have questions, go. back
and observe again. If you have
concerns, talk to the owner or
director. Remember that you
alone have your child's well
being as a top priority, and it is
up to you to make the decision
that is best for you and your
child.

If the saying "practice makes
perfect" is true then some of
these young ladies may be close
to perfection this season after
a summer of camps, lessons,
and match play. Having had
only one and a half weeks of
practice with the new coaches
before the team's first match,
the extra practice time, hard
work and dedication to their
sport in the off season will no
doubt pay off.
Come watch them enjoy the
fruit of their labor this Wednes
day (today) when they play
their first match, which is at
home against Roanoke Rapids.
Singles matches begin at4 p.m.
Doubles are played immedi
ately afterward.
