Although researchers are not totally cer tain that the Bennett's Mill is the exact site referred to, "In all likelihood a grist mill oper ated here for over 200 years," says Bob Harrell of the Albemarle Learning Center. "We do know the spill way from the pond into Rocky Hock Creek was built over 200 years ago." The stone foundation of the original mill straddles the creek. The original mill, dependent on the waterflow over the spill way, was shuf down during an extended drought in the 1940"s that seriously depleted water in the pond. "It was then that Mr. Warner Evans constructed a second, mill nearby," adds Harrell. "The grist in this mill was operated with the assis tance of a diesel engine." The second mil! house, although in a very advanced state of disre pair, still houses the diesel en gine and grist stone as though it were running just yesterday. The acquisition of the Mill Pond closes the loop and is con sidered a large gain in the in ventory of the assets owned or maintained by Chowan Coun ty's natural and heritage tour ism interpretation. Our wish for you this holi day season is that we may all carry its message of love, peace, and goodwill toward our fel low men in our hearts every day of the coming year. Merry Christmas to you and all those you love. The Chowan Herald Staff THE CHRISTMAS STORY And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a de cree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, ev ery one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, our of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house of lineage of David; To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so i t was, that while they were there, the days were ac complished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her flrstbom son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room tor them at the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shown round about them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel of the Lord said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tid ings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shep herds said one to another, Let us go even unto Bethlehem. and see this thing which has come to pass, which the Lord has made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all that heard it won dered at those things which were told them by the shep herds. . But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. — From the Bth/e, the Booh o/* St. ho he Law enforcement urges holiday safety The holiday season is here. "Most people are in the giving mood to begin with," says Chief Greg Bonner of the Edenton Police Depart ment. "They are more likely to let their guard down and allow individuals on their property or in their homes who are pos ing as needy, want to do odd jobs, or who claim to represent a charity." The Chief goes on to say that citizens should not open the door or allow anyone they don't know into their home. "The elderly seem to be the most vulnerable in this type of situation," the chief adds. The same types of cautions apply to shoppers.
