A.J. ATKINSON
Adam John Atkinson, 93, of
1341 Paradise Road, Edenton,
died Saturday, June 22, at
Britthaven of Edenton.
Mr. Atkinson was a native of
Baltimore, MD, and lived the
last seven years in Edenton.
He was the son of the late Wil
liam John Atkinson and Kate
Wild Atkinson, and the wid
ower of Mary Helen Atkinson.
He was a retired upholsterer, a
member of St. Anne’s Catholic
Chuch and the Knights of Co
lumbus.
Mr. Atkinson is survived by
a son, Gerald John Atkinson of
Edenton; a sister, Elizabeth
Evans of Orlando, FL; a
brother, Edward Atkinson of
Baltimore, MD; two grandchil
dren, Jerelyn Miranda and
Andrew Atkinson; two great
grandchildren, Michael Albers
and Tom Albers; and one great
great-grandchild, Christin
Albers.
A memorial service will be
held at a later date. Twiford’s
Memorial Chapel, 405 East
Church Street, Elizabeth City,

June 19, in Pitt Memorial Hos
pital, Greenville, NC.
Born in Virginia Beach, VA,
she worked as a certified nurs
ing assistant at Winslow Me
morial Home in Elizabeth City
where she loved working with
the elderly.
Survivors include: her
mother and stepfather, Vivian
Leigh Williams Owens and
Earl Owens; her former stepfa
ther, Robert Dobie of Old Trap;
a grandmother, Marie Owens
Anderson of Hertford, NC; a
former grandmother, Cath
erine Dobie of Elizabeth City,
NC; and several aunts and
uncles, including Herschell
Williams of Jacksonville, FL.
A graveside service was held
Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m. in
Cedar Wood Cemetery with the
Rev. Kenneth McNeill officiat
ing.

HUMPHLETT
HERTFORD, NC — Walter
Lee Humphlett Jr., 68, of
Winfall, NC, died Saturday
evening, June 22, in Chowan
Hospital.
Born in Perquimans County,
NC he was the widower of Jean
Gray Humphlett and the son of
’ the late Gladys Winslow and
Walter Lee Humphlett. He re
tired as an agency manager
with NC Farm Bureau Insur
ance and helped establish the
northeast regional offices of
Farm Bureau.
Humphlett was a member of
the Epworth United Methodist
Church, a past president of the
Perquimans County Jaycees
and the Perquimans County
Chamber of Commerce and
served on the board of direc
tors for Albemarle Regional
Planning Development Com
mission. He also formerly
served as a Democratic Pre
cinct Chairman and was active
in the formation of the
Newbold-White House Asso
ciation. He served in the Army
during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include: a daugh
ter, Susan H. White of Hertford;
a son, Walter Lee Humphlett
III of Columbia, NC; a sister,
Patsy White of Murfreesboro,
NC; three grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held
Tuesday June 25, at 2 p.m. in
Cedar Wood Cemetery with
Swindell Funeral Home in
charge of arrangements.

Frances Mae Clapper
Neterer, 93, died Wednesday,
June 19, in Edenton Prime
Time Village.
A native of Hollidaysburg,
PA, she was a homemaker. She
was the daughter of the late
John and Carrie McNulty Clap
per and the widow of George E.
Neterer. She was a member of
the Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include: one
daughter, Doris Miller of
Hertford, NC; a son, Donald
Neterer of Melbourne, FL; two
sisters, . Ruth Goshen of
Lakemont, PA and Dorothy
Werking of California; two
brothers, Paul Clapper of
Lakemont, PA and Marion
Clapper of Hollidaysburg, PA;
nine grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren.

HERTFORD, NC
Raymond Louis Schofield, 89,
of 105 Ballahack Road, died
Saturday morning, June 22, in
Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth
City, NC.
Born in Shamokin, PA he
was the son of the late Charles
and Marie Lanning Schofield.
He was retired from the De
partment of Defense as a Quar
termaster and had also retired
from the Army as a Master Ser
geant. He was a member of Holy
Trinity Episcopal Church.
Survivors include: his wife,
Clara Hansen Schofield, and a
son, Richard David Schofield
of Lynchburg, VA.
A memorial service was held
Tuesday, June 25, at 11 a.m. in
Holy Trinity Episcopal Church
with the Rev. Ralph Clark and
the Rev. Gene Boyce officiat
ing. Burial followed in the
church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be
sent to a charity of the donor’s
choice.

Kathleen Williamson Shaw,
99, formerly of Lexington, NC,.
died Wednesday, June 19. Mrs.
Shaw had been a patient at
Edenton Prime Time from 1987
until 2001 and then lived at
Korea vets forming new chapter

veterans (1950-1955) and veter
ans who served in Korea from
1945 to the present. The Na
tional Korean War Veterans
Association has announced
that the present members in
North Carolina will be devel
oping a new chapter. Permis
sion has been granted to the
members to start work on de
veloping the chapter immedi
ately.
(2) Medal of Honor: Any
Medal of Honor recipient, so
honored for service in Korea
during the Korean War shall
be eligible for life membership.
(3) Prisoner of War: Any per
son held as a prisoner of war by
the North Koreans, Chinese,
or Russian forces during and
after the period of hostilities
from June 25, 1950 forward,
shall be eligible for life mem
bership.

Shaw. She was the owner of

in Lexington, NC before retire
ment in 1966 and was a mem
ber of the First Methodist
Church in Lexington.

Charlie Thomas Venters Sr.,
81, of the 100 block of Roberts
Road, Edenton, died Monday,
June 17, in Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Venters was the son of
the late Nellie H. Venters
Bivens and Charlie Franklin
Venters. He was the husband
of Mrs. Ruth H. Venters for 60
1/2 years. He was a member of
the Providence Baptist Church
in Chesapeake, VA.
Besides his wife, survivors
include: his daughter, Char
lotte Hux and her husband,
C.M. Jr.; his two sons, Charlie
T. Venters and his wife Betty
and Scott E. Venters and his
wife, Beverly, all of Edenton;
four brothers, Johnny Bivens
of Edenton, Roy Bivens of
Rocky Mount, NC, Jessie
Bivens of Edenton, and Carl*
Bivens of Edenton; 12 grand'
children; two great-grandchil
