Saturday - 7/13 TURTLES, TERRAPtN AND TORTO!SES Come to the canoe rental area at Merchants Millpond at 2 p.m. on July 13 to learn about the differences in turtles, terrapins and tortoises. July 20. at 9 a.m. come to the canoe area to canoe the blackwater of Merchants Millpond and learn more about its many unique natural and historical features. The program will last about two hours and will require pre registration. There will be small fee charged for the use of park canoes on this trip. Meet at the canoe rental area. July 20. come learn the fundamentals of fly fishing on Lake Phelps. AH equipment will be provided by the park, however, any person age 16 or over must have a valid NC fishing license. Please dress to get wet. Some essential items include: shoes for wading, sunscreen, wide brim hat and sunglasses. This program is limited to 15 participants ages 12 and older. CHOWAN HOSPITAL FUNDRA!SER Friends of Chowan Hospital in Edenton w ill host a 50's style dance as this year's fundraiser in support bf the hospital. The "Return to Happy Days" dance is planned for Aug. 3. 7 p:m. to midnight, at Leon Nixon's Catering building on Hwy. 32. There will be contests and door prizes, and delicious food. In honor of the late Rick Woodard, a long-time phy sician's assistant in Bertie County, a scholarship at East ern Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine would be established for a stu dent from Bertie County. The Rick Woodard Memo rial Scholarship fund would help pay tuition costs for ECU's physician assistant program. The scholarship recipient Bob Tayior would have to be a resident of Bertie County and pledge to return to work in the county for two years upon gradua tion. The Rotary Club is propos ing an initial $10,000 fund raising effort for the scholar ship. Donations are welcome. Woodard passed away Feb. 26 after a long battle with can cer. He came to Windsor in 1976 after graduating from the University of Indiana. Robert "Bob" Taylor of Edenton was elected presi dent of the 35-member club. Taylor is advertising man ager for the Bertie Ledger Advance in Windsor, NC. Jodie Rhea was named vice president, while Mary Davis was elected secretary/trea surer. The officers will be in stalled July 25. Taylor said the club plans to hold a number offund-rais ers during the year to help raise money for the scholar ship fund. "We're also looking for matching funds from local businesses, regional founda tions and Rotary Interna tional," he said. If we are successful, we will offer two $10,000 scholar ships."
