Aces lose battle with Williamston
BY ROB BARKER
Holmes High School
Lack of momentum in the
first quarter of Friday night’s
game in Williamston would
prove to kill the Aces’ chance
of defeating the Tigers for
three straight games. It was a
tough loss for the Edenton
team, in a game that could
have gone either way up till the
last minute.
Edenton coach. Ed Thorn
ton, said, “I was real proud of
our guys. We made some great
plays, but just couldn’t convert
when it mattered most.”
Williamston took the lead
early in the game when quar
terback Brad Roach completed
a 27-yard pass to junior run
ning back J.J. House. Trey
Warren booted the first of his
four successful extra points for
the night. The Tigers’ second
score came in the first quarter
on a four-yard run by Vincent
Burns and Warren’s second
extra point.
Junior Patrick Bond’s spe
cial team performance pro
vided the spark in the second
quarter that kept the Aces
alive. Bond produced a text
book block of Brody Bland’s
punt, sending the ball loose
into the end zone, where Jim
Mills trapped it for the Aces’
first touchdown. Mills then
added the extra point, bringing
the score to 14-7.
The large crowd of Edenton
fans were on their feet when
the Aces tied it up in the sec
ond quarter. Bondi coming in
at fullback, punched in a four
yard run for the score. Mills
added his second extra point of
the night and the score would
remain tied at halftime, 14-14.
Third quarter action
brought' each team a score.
Again, Patrick Bond’s running
attack produced results for the
Edenton Aces. Taking it thir
teen yards for the score, Bond
put the Aces in the lead, and
Mills provided the extra point,

Edenton.
Williamston's Antonio
Tillman answered shortly with
a fifteen-yard touchdown run,
followed by Warren’s extra
point. The third quarter ended
in another tied score, 21-21.
With 9:40 left in the fourth
quarter. Williamston's Vincent
Burns took it up the middle on
a nine-yard run for the final
touchdown of the night. War
ren added the extra point, put
ting Williamston in the lead,
28-21.
The Aces began a frustrat
ing attempt to even the score,
taking it deep to the
Williamston fourteen-yard
line. The Edenton defense held
the Tigers on their possession,
and the Aces got the ball back
one more time at mid-field.
With a little over a minute of
play left, the Aces weren’t able
to produce.

Girls Tennis Team 7-0 in
Northeast Conference
BY MARY SAWYER
Correspondent
Once again there is no team in
the Northeastern Coastal Confer
ence that poses a threat to the
Edenton Holmes girls tennis
team. The Lady Aces have
stroked their way through the
first half of conference play with
out dropping even a set. Last
week’s victims were Bertie and
Northeastern.In a non-confer
ence match up last week Edenton
challenged Washington, a 3-A
school, and me away with a 9-0
win. The junior varsity team also
won last week, scoring it’s own 9
