Second ha!f haunts Aces
BY ROB BARKER
#o/rnes Sc/zoo/
All season long the second
half has haunted the Edenton
Aces. Friday night against
Hertford County it happened
again.
Hertford County got on the
board first as Quinton Valen
tine races 70 yards for the
touchdown; PAT was good.
Edenton's offense answered
with Rogerick Williams scam
pering in from 14 yards out,
and Brian Swicegood's PAT
was good to even the score.
Edenton's defense came on
the field and shortly forced the
Bears to kick. This gave the
Aces offense an opportunity to
take the lead. And take the lead
they did. On the first play from
scrimmage Rogerick Williams
went virtually untouched 65
yards for the touchdown. The
extra point was blocked, but
the Aces were ahead 13-7
On the ensuing kickoff the
Aces forced Hertford County
kick returner Valentine into
his own end zone for the safety
This gave the Aces two points
but also the ball for a chance
to widen the score. A good kick
return gave Edenton decent
field position and they drove
down to the Bears 2-yard line
where Rogerick Williams pow
ered his way into the end zone.
The Aces lined up for the ex
tra point, but the holder,
Judson Smith, kept it around
the right for the 2-point conver
sion.
The Aces defense held
strong on Hertford County's
next series of downs and on
the next Aces' possession, Wil
liams scored again from 1-yard
out and the kick was good. The
Aces went into the locker room
at halftime with what seemed
to be a comfortable 30-7 lead.
The second half would prove
miserable for the Aces, scoring
just one touchdown and allow
ing five by the Bears.
The Bears' defense came out
strong, stopping the Aces on
their first possession. Their
offense held their momentum
and scored on the Aces for the
first time since their first pos
session of the game. The Bears
scored one more touchdown
before the Aces would answer
with Rogerick Williams taking
it in from 40 yards out.
Even at the end of the third
quarter, the Aces had a lead of
37-21. Until the last four min
utes of the fourth quarter, the
Aces looked like they were go
ing to pull a Homecoming up
set over the Bears.
The Bears scored 3 unan
swered touchdowns in the last
four minutes of the game. The
Aces had two crucial turn
overs inside their own 20,
which led to their heartbreak
ing loss. Edenton coach Ed
Thornton commented, "We
have to cut out the small mis
takes that are hurting us. We
played well in spots but just
have to be more consistent,"
Leading the Aces' ground
game was senior running back
Rogerick Williams with 188
yards on 20 carries and five
touchdowns. Cal Walters con
tributed 74 yards on 16 carries
and Will Hollowell had 13
yards on 2 carries. Patrick
Bond had 1 carry for 2 yards.
On the passing side Swicegood
was 3-8 for 44 yards and 1 in
terception. Rogerick Williams
caught 2 passes for 19 yards.
Jim Mills and Judson Smith
hauled in 1 pass each for gains
of 25 and 12 yards. Cornerback
T. J. Palmer had 14 tackles and
linebacker Heath Hollowell
had 13 tackles.
The Aces are off this Friday
but travel next week to take on
the Manteo Redskins, their
third 3-A opponent in 3 weeks.
