Community Newspapers in Education Week is March 3-7 ; The Chowan Herald Newspapers in Edu cation program provides an additional re source in classrooms for students in Pre-Kin dergarten through Grade 12. ; Teachers use these newspapers in a myriad ■of creative ways to reinforce the existing cur riculum, and students love to receive their own paper! This year, thanks to additional Sponsors, the program has added occasional 'supplemental inserts and a breakfast serial [about the Wright Brothers. ; During this 2002-2003 school year, more than two thousand young people receive a weekly Chowan Herald thanks to the gener ous donations of the following sponsors: Bill Culpepper, North Carolina House, who is sponsoring the serial “Dreams Come True, The Story of The First Flight” which is on its ninth chapter this week. Edenton Motors whose generous contribu tions not only are providing students with newspapers- but who sponsor the “Student Herald” a weekly half-page in the newspaper featuring writings and drawings by area, youths. Supporting literacy in our community by sponsoring two classes this year are: Chowan Chiropractic, Christopher Koppelman, D.D.S., Fran Mclntyre-Smith, Noble Brothers and Nucor Steel. Below are a few of the many businesses and individuals shown with some of the students that they are sponsoring. Betty Bunch of Gateway Bank visits the class of Linda Williams at Walker School. Gate way Bank provides a copy of the Chowan Herald to every student in this class on a weekly basis all year. Terry Waff of Magnolia's enjoys meeting Dr. Pekotsky's class at Walker School. Magnolia's is a NIE sponsor, donating newspapers on a weekly basis for the students in Dr. Pekotsky's class. Dr. Cranford of Chowan Chiropractic is the NIE sponsor for Mrs. Stroud's first grade class at White Oak School. The Chowan Herald Newspaper in Education program relies on the support of busi nesses and individuals who believe in supporting literacy in our community. Mr. and Mrs. Norm Castellani sponsor Mrs. Bean's class at White Oak School. Because of their generos ity, Mrs. Bean's students receive newspapers weekly to use as an additional classroom resource. Nicole Pierce, a dental assistant at the office of Dr. Christopher Koppelman, DDS, visits one of the two classes sponsored by Dr. Koppelman in the NIE program. Mrs. Bass's Multi age class uses the newspapers as an additional resource in their class weekly. r ■whr Noble Brothers provides newspapers for the classes of Mrs. Jackson at D.F. Walker School. Their generous sponsorship allows these students to receive newspapers on a weekly basis. Vic Alexander of RBC Centura sponsors Mrs. Timberlake's class at Walker School. RBC Centura's donation of newspapers provides an additional resource in the classroom to encourage reading, writing, and thinking skills. Mac Privott of Carolina Classic Boats visit Mrs. Privott's kindergarten class at White Oak School. Carolina Classic Boats is a Newspaper in Education sponsor, and they provide newspapers for students on a weekly basis.
