Dogwood trees being offered Ten free white flowering dog wood trees will be given to each person who joins The National ■Arbor Day Foundation during March 2003. The free trees are part of the nonprofit foundation's Trees for America campaign. “White flowering dogwoods will add year-round beauty to your home and neighbor hoods." John Rosenow, the foundation's president,' said. “Dogwoods have showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage, and red berries which attract songbirds all winter." The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between March 1 and May 31 with enclosed planting instructions. The six to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Members also receive a sub scription to “Arbor Day,” the foundation's monthly publica tion, and “The Tree Book” with informationa about tree plant ing and care. To become a mem ber of the foundation and re ceive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to “Ten Free Dog wood Trees,” National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Av enue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by March 31, 2003. (Karen Davenport photo) Fellowship to be available courtesy of NC Sea Grant North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications for a fellowship opportunity for stu dents nearing completion of an advanced degree program in natural resources or marine sciences. The one-year Marine Fisher ies Fellowship provides a $26,000 stipend. It is open to graduate or postgraduate stu dents who are enrolled in master’s, doctoral or profes sional degree programs at North Carolina universities and colleges. The selected fellow will be placed, beginning July 1,2003, with the NC Division of Ma rine Fisheries (DMF). The fo cus of the experience will be on an evaluation of DMF monitoring programs. The fel low will analyze historical data sets and perform gear ef ficiency studies. Applications must be sub mitted no later than April 18. Send a personal/academic re sume; a statement—no longer than two pages — giving rea sons for applying and educa tional/career goals; a copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts; and two letters of recommendation from profes sors with knowledge of applicant’s academic perfor mance. Even after realizing they were totally booked, Dr. Koppelman and his staff recognized this need and somehow managed to squeeze seven children into their full schedule.” Other events of the day included a presentation for parents regarding Preven tive Dental Care given by the Partnership for Children’s Reta Blair, and a story time for children fo cusing on dental hygiene provided by Shephard Pruden Memorial Library’s Literacy Outreach Coordi nator, Michele Vanterpool. total of donated goods and services for “Give Kids a Smile” day in Chowan County was approximately $3,000. All the sponsors invol-ved were in agree ment that “sometimes it just feels good to give back to the community,” and they are all looking forward to participating in the event again next year. The Chowan/Gates/ Perqui-mans Partnership for Children is a private, not-for-profit organization whose focus is children from birth through age five in the tri-county area. The Partnership’s goal is to en sure that children begin school healthy and ready to learn.
