Former CIA operative looks at today's situations When you look into the display case at the library this month, you’ll see strange characters looking back at you! They are face jugs, a form of Southern folk art in pottery, that are probably derived from African tradi tions. Those in the case are wonderful examples of jugs that are still being made in Seagrove, NC, and other potting centers in the South. “Terrorism: What Is It and Where Is It?’^is a timely topic that will be addressed at the library on Monday. March 10 at 7 p.m. Former CIA opera tive and Edenton resident, Robert Chapman, will share FRIDAY MARCH 21 ST BAR-B-ftUE & FRIED CHICKEN $6.00 LUNCH DINNER 11:00 - 1:00 5:00 - 7:00 TAKE OIT ONLY EAT IN OR TAKE OIT AT LEON NIXON'S CATERING BIG AUCTION 7:00 PM Check It Out ROSALIE MILLER his experiences as they relate to today's headlines. A young litigator in the public defender's office accidentally happens onto a case that could garner him a huge, really huge, settlement. It doesn’t take him too long to leave public law, set up his own firm and go for the big score in The King af Torts. Author John Grisham’s target is mass, tort lawyers, those who rake off huge fees with little going to the injured party The lawyer/cop duo of Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky find themselves running from the police in The First Law by John Lescroat. Abe’s friend has been killed and Dismas’ client is the number one suspect. In Revenge of the Middle Aged Woman by British author Elizabeth Buchan, a book review editor loses her job and her husband to her pushy young assistant. Despite the title, the plot is more about reassessment at mid-life than it is about getting even. One reviewer recommended it for Elizabeth Berg fans. It’s already a major bestseller in England. The Kingmaker by Brian Haig (Alexander Haig’s son) is a legal thriller in which a JAG attorney, Sean Drummond, defends a brigadier general charged with being a spy for the Soviets for ten years. The general swears he is being framed, but Drummond doesn’t really believe him until his own life is threat ened when he gets close to the truth. The action bounces between Washington and Moscow with some Fort Leavenworth thrown in. Slingshot Warbirds: World War II U.S. Navy Scout Observation Airmen describes a little-known group of Navy pilots. Their planes, the warbirds, were floatplanes launched by catapult from the decks of ships for reconnais sance missions. On their return they had to land on water near their ships and be hoisted onboard by cranes. These scout-observation pilots were employed at night during battles to drop magne sium flares to light up an area to assist their ships’ guns and torpedo firing. They also flew in support of PT boats, searched the waters for downed airmen, and looked for enemy forces on land and at sea. At the time of this writing, it is a gray and gloomy day and a cookbook entitled Soup: A Way of Life looks good. Illustrations of hearty and simple, hot and cold, exotic and familiar recipes w ill tempt you to haul out the stock pot and fill the house with the luscious smell of simmering soup. The premise of the project is the fact that every parent has experienced the panic of not knowing where their child, is, even if only for a minute. Each day, children wander off in de partment stores, amusement parks and campgrounds to list a few. Thankfully, most lost children are quickly recovered and returned to their parents. But even with the best paren tal care, nearly 2,100 children a day, or almost two children a minute are reported missing. Many can be recovered if their parents immediately provide police with a complete record of identification. Parents should always be prepared, just in case of an emergency, by keeping updated records. This program will provide families a personal identifica tion booklet with essential in formation about their children including a high quality pho tograph, fingerprints, hair sample and other identifying information helpful in locating a missing child. All children ages 1-12 are encouraged to participate. Gratefully, Chowan County has been blessed by not having an “Amber Alert” but such a terrible occurrence could hap pen. There are nine registered pedophiles listed in Chowan County. Protect your children and plan to attend. Tell your neighbors and friends about the program. All the information is given to the parent and nothing is kept by law enforcement. The program is free and a light lunch will be provided by the students of the Culinary Arts Department of COA. We know a clown or two will be there to entertain the children. Nominees are sought for volunteer awards Nominations are due Mon day, March 17, for the Albemarle Commission's Annual Volun teer Appreciation Awards. The awards will be presented at a luncheon on April 3. The awards honor those who have shown outstanding dedi cation and devotion to older adults in the agency’s 10-county service area.
