OLF Continued From Page 1-A ment requesting tourist im pact information for all pos sible sites.” Knighton said Richard Bunch, executive director of the Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce, worked with the Northeast Partnership to pro vide all of the information re quested by the Navy Counties in northeastern North Carolina are strongly opposing the OLF, contending such an airfield will negatively “ affect the region’s environ ment and quality of life. Only Craven officials have requested the Navy locate the landing field within its county’s bor ders. In addition to preferring Washington or Craven coun ties for the OLF, Navy officials have indicated they would pre fer basing at least two of their 10 new SuperHornet squad rons — and as many as four squadrons—at the US Marine Base at Cherry Point, NC. Navy officials have also indicated that they would like the rest of the SuperHornet squadrons to be based at Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA. “Washington County doesn’t want the OLF, but but Craven has said it will take it if it also gets the Super Hornets,” Kea ton said. “Craven could get the OLF and the economic benefits of the SuperHornets, but Washington would get no ben efits from the OLF and would just get all of the noise.” While the Navy supports splitting the bases, Virginia Beach officials have indicated in the past that they would like to have all 10 new SuperHornet squadrons based at Oceana. Such a move would most likely call for an OLF to be located in a nearby North Carolina county, local officials say. The likely sites for the OLF would be Washington, Perquimans or Bertie counties. Keaton and Knighton both said that the OLF coalition — which includes officials from Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, Bertie, Washington and Hyde counties — has been meeting every two weeks to keep informed about the OLF site selection process. The coa lition strongly opposes an OLF being located anywhere in northeastern North Carolina. “We keep in touch with our Congressional delegation,” Keaton said. “We keep remind ing them what our position is on this issue.” Knighton said the Navy’s choice for an OLF site should be known by early summer. 3 rescued when boat capsizes BY TAMIKA SPRUILL Staff Writer Local rescue workers were called to the scene when a boat capsized in the Edenton Bay Monday, April 21st behind the Police Station.
