Local businesses need to be
on the lookout for counterfeit
bills, according to Chief Bon
ner of the Edenton Police De
partment.
“Counterfeit bills in the 50
and 100 dollar denominations
are floating around the area,”
Bonner states. “A number of
Edenton businesses have re
ceived these type of bills.”
From late 2002 to the present
there have been a total of at
least nine Edenton businesses
that have at some point been a
victims of counterfeit money.

Tuesday’s edition of the
Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald
had yet had time to cool follow
ing its run through the press
when the first phone call was
received here at our Ahoskie
office concerning the identity
of a mysterious fish caught
July 3 by Kenny Far-mer in the
Chowan River near Petty
Shores.
“Look at those teeth...it’s
gotta be a piranha,” said caller
number one, making reference
to a photo published on Tues
day’s sports page.
The calls, well over 50 in
number, didn’t slow down un
til late Thursday. With the ex
ception of three individuals,
all proclaimed they thought
the photo was that of a pira
nha. For the safety of all who

ers, water skiers, jet-skiers and
swimmers — thank goodness
the majority of those re
sponses were incorrect.
There’s nothing like a school
of flesh-eating piranha to spoil
a pleasant day of aquatic rec
reation.
Thomas Brittenham was the
first to correctly identify the
mystery fish. He informed The
News-Herald that he knew of
a man in Virginia who had
hooked a similar-looking fish
last year. That man, Jimmy
Worrell of Franklin, VA, veri
fied that information, saying
he caught a fish with “human
looking teeth in a Franklin
area lake.
“The Virginia Fish and
Game Commission identified
the fish as a pacu, a tropical
fish normally found in the
Amazon region,” said Worrell.
“That fish isn’t a native of our
waterways, so it must have
been put in the lake by some
one who had it in their
aquarium and got rid of it af
ter it got too big.”

Council has speedy session
BY REBECCA BUNCH

Last Tuesday evening’s
Edenton Town Council meet
ing was unusual in a couple of
respects. The meeting ended in
possibly record time — about
20 minutes — and there was
not a single private citizen
there to watch the town’s busi-.
ness being conducted.
The most interesting bit of
business came toward the
close of the meeting when
Councilman Jimmy Stallings
brought up the issue of several
overgrown area sites where he
said the grass urgently needed
mowing. “It’s three feet tall
back there,” he said, referring
to one area adjacent to the lo

Documentary filming locally
Area residents and students from the COA acted as slaves and jailers at the Old Chowan
County Jail Tuesday during PBS filming of the Nat Turner Rebellion's effect on slave states.
Southern towns like Edenton were terrified of possible slave revolts and began to arrest
African-Americans as a result of any suspicions, real or imagined. Additional taping is
planned at Somerset.in Washington County. (Staff photo by Angela Perez)
