Commission plans to elevate the Barker House
Hurricane damage
prompts plan to lift
it 10-feet above sea level

Hoping to avoid another
blow by a hurricane, keepers
of Edenton’s famed- Barker
House want to put it out of
harm’s way.
More precisely, the town’s
historical commission is plan
ning to raise the 222-year-old
structure to 10 feet above sea
level. Last September, Hurri
cane Isabel drove floodwaters
into homes and businesses
along the town’s waterfront.

It wasn’t even close.
They rolled through the
regular season like
nobody’s business, then
seared the competition in

The preservation panel

the project.

MacEnulty says farewell to town

It takes strong, agile fingers
to be a good pianist. Rosalind
MacEnulty’s graceful fingers
dance rapidly between the
•keys as she plays a Debussy
tune on the Steinway L size
piano (mid size between a
Grand and Baby Grand) she
acquired when she was nine.
Besides a bookshelf and table
that have been in her family for
generations, the piano is
among the only things she
takes with her when she
moves. These things will be
in 1782, was the home of Tho
mas and Penelope Barker.
Penelope Barker is reported to
have presided over the Eden
ton Tea Party of 1774.
Although privately owned
by the historic panel, it is open
to the public and remains one
of the top draws on the town’s
Historic Walking Tour.
To avoid having “a brick
wall on both sides,” the new
ground-floor walls would con
tain louvered vents and arches.
Bean said the final appearance
should be “graceful enough.”
Appropriate landscaping is
also part of the plan, he added.
Plans are to have the work
begin Aug. 23 and be completed
in time for the annual Christ
mas Candlelight Tour in De
cember. In the meantime, the
Barker House bookstore will
move to the Robin Sams Gallery
at 315 S. Broad Street.

Inmate back
in custody after
escape from jail

On Tuesday afternoon at
approximately 3:28 p.m.
Terrence Harris, age 19, of
Chowan County escaped
from Chowan County Deten
tion Facility through a air
conditioning duct in the visi
tation area. With the help of
citizens, Harris was recap
tured at 4:02 PM without in
cident.
Sheriff Spruill stated that
the investigation revealed a
flaw in the building design.

ing in ways they rarely have
before.
With a proposed change to
the town/county land use plan,
developers could have an ur
ban waterfront designation to
use. One proposed develop
ment, Sandy Point, could ben
efit from the new zoning clas
sification, as could the county,
officials indicated during a
County Planning Board meet
ing Monday night.
