UU sponsors Food Pantry fundraiser By REBECCA BUNCH Staff Writer The greatest time of need for the Food Pantry is during the winter just' after the holidays. Director Ray Wells re fers to January and Feb ruary as the Pantry’s annual “drought period” — a time of year when do nations typically drop but the need for food during the cold winter months re mains high. ; ■ A local group, the Uni tarian Universalist fellow ship, got the message and has planned a “Fill the Food Pantry” fundraiser dinner on Jan. 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Nothin’ Fancy Cafe in Edenton. He said that right now the pantry is serving about 250 families a month, and that with continued high unemployment the de mand is growing. “This month, I’m seeing a lot of new people coming in, people I’ve never seen before,” Wells said. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Pan try to help those in need, Lawson said. Tickets for the fund raiser are $18 in advance and will be $20 at the door. They are available for pur chase at the Edenton Cof fee House and at Nothin’ Fancy Last summer the li- 1 brary was awarded $12,000 in grants by our local Ann L. Sams Endowment, and LSTA (Library Services and , Technology Act). LSTA are federal funds from the Institute of Mu- - seum and Library Servic es that are awarded by the State Library to eligible North Carolina libraries. The purpose of the grant is to update the nonfiction collection for children in grades K-8 and provide homework resources for students, parents, and teachers, as well as satisfy the personal curiosity of young inquiring minds. About a third of the books arrived and are dis played prominently in the ChMren’s Room. The majority of the books arrive in series for mat so young readers can explore many angles of a subject.
