STARNES Editor An 80-year-old bicyclist participating in the week end's Cycle North Carolina Spring Ride died of an ap parent heart attack while touring the Chowan coun tryside, authorities said. Hugh C. Carrington of Annapolis, Md. perished around noon Saturday while riding along Indian Trail Road in the eastern part of Chowan County, ac cording to Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin. Carrington, who was riding in a group of cyclists that included his wife collapsed during the trek. “We had just stopped at a rest stop where he was walking around and talk ing,” said wife Donna Car rington from her home Monday afternoon. “We had resumed riding when I heard a friend scream.” Carrington said she turned around a found that her husband had collapsed from'his bicycle. A doctor, also cycling, stopped and immediately performed CPR, she added. Two other medical profes sionals who were riding also stopped to help before ■ paramedics arrived. “He was breathing loud er and harder than normal. STARNES Editor Congressman Walter Jones prefers that the United States military stand down from its perpetual world policing — a break that would help slow out of-control defense spending while also allowing time to re build its national security. STARNES Editor County officials rejected all nine of the property owners challenging their tax bills during an annual Equalization and Review hearing. Eight of the disputes directly relate to property values set during the last revaluation eight years ago compared to perceived val .ues in a downtrodden econ omy The property owners argued that their values are not consistent with the cur rent market. One business argued that the county’s tax office contributed to its tax delinquency, therefore, Chowan should absorb half of its debt. “I think the county shares some responsibility here,” said Scott McLaughlin, owner of Albemarle Boats, at the April 1 hearing. “We feel Chowan County has some joint ownership here.” McLaughlin advised county commissioners that in 2009 his newly acquired company sent in the proper tax payment only to be in formed by the tax depart ment that the company had overpaid. Albemarle Boats then responded with a re vised payment of less.
