Marvin Evans Evans, rural firefighting pioneer, dies BY REBECCA BUNCH Staff Writer Marvin Lewis Evans, the last surviv ing charter member of the Center Hill - Crossroads Fire Department, died last Friday, Feb. 7 at his home. Evans was 93. Evans served as a member of the fire department for 45 years, a feat no other firefighter with the department ever achieved, according to retired Fire Chief Louis Nixoa Nixon, who was among those associated with the volunteer fire department that attended Evans’ funeral Monday afternoon, remembered Evans as a very special man. “Marvin was the type of person that was always giving back to his community and his fellow man,” Nixon said. “Like the preacher said today at his funeral, Marvin would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it” Nixon said that Evans took a lot of pride in being a part of the fire depart ment and worked tirelessly to help train the firefighters there, particularly the younger ones. Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin, who was a volunteer with the fire department for more than two decades, and one of its younger members, said he and Evans both had November birthdays and al ways celebrated them together at the fire station with cupcakes. Evans was the department’s founder and one of its most active members, Goodwin said. “Even in his 90s, he was still one of the hardest working men I ever knew,” Good win said. “Day or night, he would come out to help us.” County Commissioner Jeff Smith described Evans as a true community See EVANS, 2A As of presstime, no one had filed in the 3rd District N.C. Board mulls fire station ’f for southern Chowan BY REGGIE PONDER Editor "• * A satellite fire station for the south ern part of Chowan County is once again on the front burner for the coun ty commissioners. Edenton Fire Chief Craig Forlines made a presentation on the fire station proposal during the Feb. 3 meeting of the Chowan County Board of Com missioners. Although the topic of a proposed third fire station frequently comes up for discussion under the heading “southern Chowan fire coverage,” the entire county in fact is already cov ered by fire departments. The Center Hill-Crossroads Volunteer Fire De partment covers much of the northern part of the county and the Edenton Fire Department covers the town and the remainder of the southern part of the county. During his presentation to the com missioners, Forlines emphasized that the southern part of the county al ready has fire coverage. But a fire station in that part of the county would improve homeowners’ insurance rates for residents who would then be within the six-mile or bit of a station, Forlines said. The discussion about the need for a fire station toward the southern end of the county has been going on for sev eral years, county officials noted. Forlines pointed out that a new fire station would have to be approved by the state. The commissioners would be re sponsible for building the fire station and paying the utilities, according to Forlines. The town’s fire department already has personnel and equipment to cover the station, he said. The county’s support for the Eden ton Fire Department — the ratio of county funding to town funding — is based on a five-year average of the number of calls in town and outside town. She said that to be valid the orders must be signed by a physician at the request of parents. “All of our school nurses have looked at this issue,” TVnch said. Smith said that as discus sions continued it became obvious the school nurses would have trouble carry ing out the dictates of a DNR order. “We finally came to the conclusion that we could not ask them not to help stu dents,” Smith said. Thus, a recommendation that the nursing staff not be required to honor a DNR or der was given to the school board at the monthly meet ing. lynch and Smith sug gested that if an emergency arose they would want to leave obeying the DNR order to emergency personnel that responded to the scene. Smith noted that there is a precedent for the Eden ton-Chowan board to en dorse such a policy. She said that the Camden and Gates County school systems are already declining to accept DNR orders. Only the Eliza beth City school district, she said, accepts them. “We finally came to the de See ORDERS, 2A Friday, February 21, 2014 COCKTAILS 6PM DINNER BUFFET 7PM CHOWAN COUNTY ■WT ■» « : • i_ Door Prizes, Gun Auction, unumjtei) Prints, Decoys |nd Morel Ducks 0 mumieafi anque Tickets: $60 available at door Includes buffet & giembershlp.
