The officials from Chowan, Perquimans, Gates, Bertie and Tyrrell counties also commend ed volunteers recruited through the Chowan Edenton Environ mental Group who are conduct ing a survey of hydrilla along the Chowan County shoreline of the Chowan River and preparing a baseline map of hydrilla infesta tions. Kalbach said the task force was es tablished to spend about a year work ing to improve avia non statewide, with a special emphasis on strengthening smaller general aviation air Council mulls alcohol use on sidewalks BY REBECCA BUNCH Staff Writer Town council members last week continued to discuss a proposal to allow consumption of alcohol ic beverages within designated areas outside down town businesses. The latest discussion'bn the issue occurred during the council’s Aug. 25 work session. The current town ordinance governing outdoor sidewalk dining in the downtown area allows for tables and chairs that are set up within four feet of the town’s right of way, according to Town Manager Anne-Marie Knighton. When he moved to Eden ton 25 years ago, the town See KALBACH, 6A Boy, 9, dies in Rocky ; Hock crasti From staff reports The father of a 9-year-old Chowan County boy killed in a single-vehicle accident « in the Rocky Hock commu nity Saturday night has been charged with driving while impaired in connection with the crash. Richard Anthony Altman, 45, of 115 TVnchtown Road, Edenton, has been charged with driving while impaired, according to Trooper T.E Langley of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Altman’s son, Briar James Altman of Tyner, was killed in the crash, the High way Patrol reported. The driver was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was still in the Intensive Care Unit as of Monday, according to Lang ley. Richard Anthony Alt man’s 14-year-old son also was a passenger in the truck at the time of the crash and was treated and released at Vidant Chowan Hospital, Langley said. Langley said additional charges could be filed, pend ing a thorough investigation of the crash. 1999 GMC Sierra truck was traveling south on Riv er Road around 7:15 p.m. Saturday when it ran off the road in a curve and over turned in a field, according to the Highway Patrol.
