Pie, Pi and more Pi at your local library PH'.’ Hid someone say pie? Well there is a Pie Easting < oinest this Saturday at the Ziegler House at the Hdenton State Historic Site. l'\e always wanted to do an eating contest because one of the most famous graduates of San Jose State Univer sity (where I earned my library degree) is Joey Chestnut who holds the world record for hot dog eating. But the Shepard Pruden Memorial Library is doing more with pie than eating it. In the next few months you may see some new ish looking computer workstations being scat tered through the library. The Pettigrew Regional Library has negotiated a contract to allow for web-based printing. This frees up the Shepard JENNIFER FINLAY CHECK IT OUT SHEPARD PRUDEN MEMORIAL LIBRARY Pruden Memorial Library from having to have old fashioned wired network computers for basic tasks such as downloading doc uments to print. With this in mind. Josh and I have been experimenting with very small and very inex pensive computers called Raspberry Pi. They cost till of $3!).lit). My other hope is that Josh and 1 can write tin "academic” paper to promote this idea of small and cheap computers for public li braries In 11*1)7. Unfortu nately federal, state and local funding no longer includes monies set aside for the everyday comput ers that so many of our patrons depend on. We’ve been fortunate over the past few years to be able to replace aging technol ogy through the Shepard Pruden Memorial Library7 Board of Trustees, the Harry Rosenblatt Me morial Speakers Series, the Chowan Commu nity Foundation and the Edenton Woman's Club. My goal is to make the Shepard-Pruden Memo rial Library the best small library in America and to be able to share the posi tive accomplishments of our library with the rest of the world. To be frank, funding will never meet the pace of the changes in technology - so let’s find a way to work around the .realities we face. In the )ech world they call this disruption. 1 see is this as an opportunity to engage in “future thinking.” I'd like to give a big thanks to the Chowan Community Foundation for the fund ing to try this project. So come join me in the Rasp berry Pi project or at the Pie Eating Contest! We also have non-Pi related events coming up including Yoga for Kids on Saturday the 21st and a Brunch with an Author on December 5th. Other library news of note: we will be closed for Thanks giving on November 26th, 27th, and 28th. And if you are not already volunteer ing for something dur ing the Candlelight Tour - join the Friends as we keep the library doors open to provide warmth and a respite from all the excitement (aka a clean warm bathroom).
