March 17 FUNDING Continued from 1A Current enrollment is at a 23-year low of 2,074. Jack son said. That's down from a peak of 2,000 in the early 1990s, he said. The enrollment decline appears to be related to a decrease in the county’s population, Jackson said. This year the schools lost $132,552 in state fund ing because of declining enrollment, Jackson said. The schools lost 1.5 teaching positions because of declining enrollment but didn’t let anyone go. instead absorbing the loss within the existing budget, he said. Jackson s;iid there cur rently are 34 Chowan County students enrolled in charter schools. "This is Chowan County money going out of Chow an County to somewhere else," he said. In the current budget. Jackson said, the school board asked for $1 million in additional local cur rent expense funding. The county providing .$60,00(1 in additional funding, he said.
