First responders honored for service, involvement BY REBECCA BUNCH Staff Writer Seven awards were pre sented to first responders in the community on Oct 27 during the 46th annual Appreciation Banquet for Chowan County Emergency Services. The banquet sponsored by the American Legion Ed ward G. Bond Post 40 Fam ily, took place at the Legion before a crowd of honorees, family and friends. Tim Dannelly, pastor of Hobbsville Baptist Church and a motivational speak er, served as the keynote speaker for the evening. In introducing Dannelly, Chowan County Clerk Mike McArthur said, “Tim is a talented guy. The first award of the eve ning was the Chowan-Eden ton Optimist Club Friend of Youth Award, presented by Deputy Sheriff John McAr thur to Hwy. Patrol Sgt. Lamon Hill. McArthur described Hill as “decisive, a good listener and problem solver.” Next it was McArthur’s turn to be surprised as he was presented the 4-H Top Cop Award in recognition of his work on behalf of young people in the Kids and Cops program by Chowan County 4-H Agent Beth Stanley and student Khalil Blount McAr thur was chosen to receive the honor, Stanley said, in recognition of demonstrat ing superior mentoring and leadership abilities. Retired Probation and Parole Chief Glorious El liott handed out the Sound side #95 Fraternal Order of Police Award to Roger Chipps, a security officer at the Edenton College of the Albemarle campus. “He is a man of many tal ents,” she said. “He has a big heart.” Chowan County EMS Di rector Colin Ryan was up next to honor paramedic Tonya Ayers with the night’s Emergency Medical Techni cian of the Year Award. “She prides herself on do ing her best at every level,” Ryan said in describing her as highly deserving of the recognition. The 2016 Fireman of the Year Award went to Center Hill - Crossroads Fire Chief Hamilton. It was presented by volunteer fireman Alan Monds. “We’re on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Monds said. “We do this to help our families and friends.” Hamilton noted that work ing that kind of a schedule requir ed a high level of com mitment not only from the firefighters but from their families as well. “If anybody deserves this award,” Hamilton said, “I guess my wife does.” He added that he loves and is dedicated to the work he does on behalf of the community. “I have a passion for it, I have a passion for helping pe.ople,” he said. The final award of the evening, the Law Enforce ment Officer of the Year Award, was presented by Chief Deputy Andy Bunch to SBI Agent Marsha Seal. Bunch said that Seal, who was hired as a special agent with the agency in 2000 was highly qualified for this spe cial recognition.
