Planner revokes permit for deer processing business
BY REGGIE PONDER
Ed’to'
Chowan County has re
voked the zoning permit for
a deer processing business
kxated in the Arrowhead
Beach subdi\ision.
A I>ee. 30 letter from
Chowan Comity Planner
Elizabeth Bryant to Hunter's
tKvr Processing on Chinook
Trail stall's the business.
"in its current location is
in violation of the Chowan
County Zoning Ordinance
and is being operated under
an improperly issued zoning
penult.”
Bryant's letter states the
business is “meat packing
and processing,” which is
considered an industrial use
in tlie zoning ordinance and
is not allowed in the R-b”
residential district when'
the operation is currently
located.
The services provided by
Hunters Deer Processing
do not fall within the defini
tion of “home occupation,”
according to Bryant’s letter.
The letter points out that
the property owner has the
right to appeal the zoning
administrator’s decision to
the Chowan County Board
of Adjustment.
Colleen Nicholas,, presi
dent of the Arrowhead
Beach Property Owners As
sociation, said the associa
tion believes the permit was
issued in error and is glad the
county Ls now revoking it
“We’re purely residen
tial," Nicholas said, and the
county’s action will help
restore Arrowhead Beach
as a residential subdivision
without businesses.
“Arrowhead Beach com
pletely supports the county
in their action,” Nicholas
said. “We support the coun
ty’s action 100 percent.”
Sissi DuPraw, who oper
ates the business, said she
plans to take whatever legal
action is necessary to keep
the business open.
“I’m a single mother who
runs a small home business
and relies on that business
to support my family,” Du
Praw said. “1 do not agree
with the county’s decision.
The permit was lawfully
granted and does not vio
late the county ordinance.
I have instructed my attor
ney, whose name is Lloyd
Clifton Smith EH, to take all
the legal steps necessary to
protect my business so that
I can continue to provide for
my children.”
