THE CHOWAN HERALD, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 22,2017 7A TWINE Continued from 1A worked in the Labor and Delivery department at Chowan Hospital for many years and a mother of 20 children. Lloyd Sr. was a professional truck driver who took pride in support ing his family. They never accepted government assis tance, Katherine, now 88, said, but managed things on their own. Beverly and Angela said that it was due to the ex ample set by their parents that all of the Twine chil dren graduated from high school, going on to college and professional careers. Among them is Beverly, Katherine’s 10th child, who followed in her mother’s footsteps and entered the nursing profession. She is a registered nurse who works for the Albemarle Alliance of Children and Families in Elizabeth City. “I’m so inspired by mom that after having 20 chil dren she became a certified nursing assistant,” Beverly said. ‘’She remains a great inspiration in all our fives.” She said she was also proud of her dad. “He provided for his chil dren,” Beverly said. “He worked hard to provide for his family and made sure we knew how important it was for us to go to college.” Angela, who retired from Elizabeth City State Univer sity with a position in Ad missions and Recruiting, is now working as a substi tute teacher. She is proud of the strong bond that continues to exist among the Twine children and their mother, she said. “We are a great family,” she said. “We’ve always been close and we’re there on Sundays since I can re member. We grew up with that closeness and we do something on everybody’s birthday.” “We also look forward to getting together for Thanksgiving and other holidays,” Angela added. “We have cookouts and spend time at the beach. We’re glad for any reason to get together.” Their mother was a good cook, particularly known for her delicious home- made rolls- and chocolate cake, the sisters said, and food remains a big part of their celebration at Thanksgiving. Each child has a special dish that is their “most requested” and the one they make sure they bring to the celebra tion. Katherine Twine said she was never bothered by having her girls in the kitchen with her learning how to cook. “They were good help,” she said. “And it was a chance for them to learn.” Joseph Twine, a min ister, said the dishes he most looks forward to see ing on the family’s table at Thanksgiving include his sisters’ potato salad, corn- bread, country ham and yams. Beverly’s macaroni and cheese is also among the most requested dishes. “We have fun when we get together,” he said. “I always look forward to the food and the fellowship, and the chance to spend time with everybody.” Beverly said that faith has always been a cor nerstone of the bond that holds the Twine family together. Many of them at tend Saunders Missionary Baptist Church where they worship together. And that togetherness has spilled over into other areas of their lives, she said. “We all know we can count on each other,” Bev erly said. “Just everything we need is right there in our family. We know we can lean on each other, that’s the big thing.” “That’s not to say we al ways agree on everything,” she added. “Sometimes we just agree to disagree. But the love we have for each other is always there.” Besides Joseph, Beverly and Angela, the surviving Twine children include: Willie L. Twine; Gwendo- SUBMITTED PHOTOS lyn Y. Twine; Sandra B.
