Following a months long effort, the campaign ended Friday with a total of $103,335 in pledges and contributions received. In offering the grant, Phil lips, a childhood friend of Mayor Roland Vaughan, made it clear that a demonstration of support from the commu nity would be required for it to be awarded. Vaughan said the outcome of the fundrais ing effort demonstrated once again the people of Chowan County could be counted on to support initiatives that are important to those who call it home. “Once again the citizens of our community rose to the challenge and met the match that brings much needed cash to our Food Pantry,” Vaughan said. “Hats off to Roger (Cole man, pantry director) and his team for the hard work needed to make this happen and a very special ‘thank you’ to Johnny Phillips and the 4 Others Foundation for then- generosity in giving back to his hometown.” Coleman said the news could not have come at a bet ter time. “Successfully matching the challenge from the 4 Oth ers Foundation means that the Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry Endowment will pro vide an additional $10,000 an nually for use in serving the food needs of area residents including children participat ing in the Book Bag Buddies See HUNGER, 2A Bulldogs perform The Chowan Middle School Band and Choir performed before a standing room only crowd Thursday at the Northern Chowan Rec reation Center. — A5 Council trio sworn-in During its Dec. 12 meeting the town council welcomed two new members and bid farewell to two others. The Edenton-Chowan School Board, administra tors, faculty, staff, students and distinguished guests honored White’s achieve ment Tuesday morning at the Hornet’s hive audito rium. “Thank you everyone so much,” White said as her eyes were watering up with in a emotionally charged voice. “You are the best peo ple ever.” White praised the School Board, “Momma” Sheila Evans, a noted educator and principal at White Oak Elementary and the kids — everyone who is a part of “Team Walker.” “To every person in this school, I love you,” she said. White is one of eight re gional finalists statewide for Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year. Regional winners will each receive $1,000 for personal use and $1,000 for their schools. The 2018 State Wells Fargo Principal of the Year will be announced in spring 2018. Since 1984, Wells Fargo Bank has finan cially supported a program in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to recognize outstanding prin cipals from the North Caro lina Public Schools.
