2A THE CHOWAN HERALD, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21,2018 Obituaries Mary Ward Nixon GREENSBORO - Mrs. Mary Ward Nixon, age 73, passed away Wednesday February 14, 2018 at Mo ses Cone Hospital. A memorial service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, February 24, at George Brothers Funeral Service. The family will receive friends following the ser vice. Mrs. Nixon was born to the late Chester and Vida Gay Ward, and raised by Dena Alece Wheeler and Thomas Ernest Bateman. She was a retired nurse with over 40 years of service, and was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Peggy Casper; brothers Terry Ward and Mitchell Ward. She is survived by her husband of 53 years Don nie William Nixon, Sr.; children Dena Byrd of Sum merfield and Donnie William Nixon, Jr. of Wilming ton. Also surviving are her grandchildren Addison Vaughn and Liam Nixon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Jamestown United Methodist Church Anchor Class, 403 E. Main St. Jamestown, NC 27282. Velma G. Quinton EDENTON - Velma Rose “Babe” Grubbs Quin ton, 93, of 1302 Arrowhead Trail, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, in Sentara Albe marle Medical Center. Mrs. Quinton was born on September 17, 1924, and was the daughter of the late Leonard and Beulah Schafer Grubbs. A homemaker, she was a member of Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church, and Women’s Aglow. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Charles Perkins. Surviving are her husband Donzel B. “Don” Quinton of Muncie, Indiana; two daughters, Sandra Kaye Perkins of Lexington, and Sherry Raye Bolt and husband Michael, of Whittier; a sister, Inez Frear of Ottawa, Kansas; three grandchildren, Ceri Bolt, Stephanie Farrington, and Brad Perkins; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 23rd, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Dan ny Gurganus. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cem etery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home the hour prior to services. Mrs. Winborne was born on October 23, 1947, and was the daughter of the late James Melvin and Do ris Ann Waff Bunch. A retired teacher and prin cipal with the Chowan County School System, she had worked in edu cation for 30 years, and had received the Regional Principal of the Year Award. A faithful member of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church, she had served as director of the W.M.U., as a Sunday School teacher, and had been the choir director for 36 years. Surviving are her husband of nearly 49 years, Robert H. “Bobby” Winborne, Sr.; her daughter, Angie Winborne Walston, and husband, Scott; her son, R.H. “Rob” Winborne, Jr., and wife, Donna; and five grandchildren, Hutch, Matthew, and John ny Winborne, and Zach and Anna Scott Walston. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church and were con ducted by her pastor, The Rev. Ron Parr. A visita tion for family and friends was held in the Family Life Center of the church immediately following the service, and a private burial was held in the church cemetery. At all other times, friends joined the family at the residence. Alma Hardison Taylor EDENTON - Alma Hardison Taylor, 80, of West Queen Street, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018, in Vidant Med ical Center, Greenville. Mrs. Taylor was born in Edenton on Decem ber 13, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Julius L. and Elizabeth Bass Hardison. A grad uate of John A. Holmes High School and East Carolina University, she received her Bachelors of Science in Educa tion in 1960. She taught school in Fairfax, Vir ginia and in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, and worked in Special Education in the Howard Coun ty, Maryland school system for over 20 years. She was a faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. “Bob” Taylor. Surviving are a son, Tedford Taylor and his hus band, Kevin Hulbirt of Ewing, NJ; a daughter, Ta mara Taylor Turner and her husband Jeffrey, and their children, Lauren and Luke Turner, all of Mill ersville, MD; and a brother, Ted Hardison and his wife, Deborah of Woodstock, GA. Visitation was held at her home, 1207 West Queen Street, on Saturday, February 17th, from 2 to 5 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 24th, at 2:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Da vid Brooks. A reception will follow at her home, 1207 West Queen Street, and inurnment will be next to her husband in Beaver Hill Cemeteiy. Lane HERTFORD - Lloyd A. Lane, 92, of 903 West Grubb Street, died Thursday, February 15, 2018 in Sentara Albemarle Med ical Center, Elizabeth City. Mr. Lane was born in Perquimans County on December 8, 1925, and was the son of the late Henry Allen and Mary Elizabeth Byrum Lane. An Army veteran hav ing served in World War II, in the early 1950’s he worked as a farm er, and in 1958 became co-owner and operator of Farmers Feed & Seed along with his brother- in-law, Moody Matthews, Jr. In 1985 his son Tony joined the operation and together they continued to run the business until 2013. A member of Hert ford United Methodist Church, he also enjoyed membership in the Hertford Fire Department for over 40 years where he had received the Fireman of the Year Award in 1978 for his courage and brav ery following his efforts to fight the Winslow Oil Company fire of January 10,1978. Among his many talents, he thoroughly enjoyed woodworking and was a master wood craftsman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Matthews Lane; a grand son, Dustin Lane; a sister, Elizabeth Bunch; and by a brother, Emmett Lane. Surviving are his children, Tony Lane (Cynthia) of Hertford, Carol Stallings (Richard Earl) of Belvi dere, and Dean M. Lane of Edenton; four grandchil dren, Melanie Mosley (Macon), Kim Monds (Alan), Amanda Parker (Charles), and Keegan Lane; and four great-grandchildren, Danielle, Hunter, Tyler, and Noah. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Hertford United Methodist Church, and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. Bryan Sex ton. Friends may join the family in the church fel lowship hall immediately following the service on Saturday, and all other times at the residence. A. L. (Al) Honeycutt, Jr. RALEIGH - A. L. (AL) Honeycutt, Jr. was born in Spring Hope, Nash County, NC, the only child of Ava Linwood and Bettie Valentine Honeycutt. He received AB and MA degrees in history from Duke University. In 1958, he joined the historic sites staff of the North Carolina Department of Archives and History. From 1963 to 2002, Mr. Honeycutt served as restoration supervisor with the North Carolina Division of Archives and History. He worked with restoration projects throughout the state includ ing the State Capitol, the Executive Mansion, and a number of important house museums. In 1973, he received the Ruth Coltrane Cannon Cup presented by Preservation/North Carolina; in April 1994 he received the Historic Halifax Preser vation Award; in September, 1994 he received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in State Govern ment; in June, 1999 he received the Anthemion Award from Capital Area Preservation for preser vation leadership; and upon his retirement, Gover nor Mike Easley conferred him with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in June 2002. He is survived by several cousins, including two dear cousins Bill Taylor and Anne Crawford of Ra leigh; and a special friend, John Lacy Kelly of Lill ington. A funeral service was held on Thursday, Febru ary 15, at 3 pm at Spring Hope Baptist Church in Spring Hope, NC. Burial followed in Oakdale Cem etery in Spring Hope.
