Edenton NSDAR members attend District VIII meeting BY SANDRA LANCASTER SPERRY For Chowan Herald FARMVILLE — District VIII NCSDAR held its yearly meeting July 17, at the First Christian Church in Farmville, hosted by the Major Benjamin May Chapter. Five members of the Edenton Tea Party Chapter, NSDAR attended the meeting — Gay Chatham, Anne Lankford, Candy Roth, Beth Taylor and Sandy Sperry. District VIII Director Anne Sneed called the meeting to order with 75 people in attendance. Re gent Pat Hodson gave an interesting history lesson about the origin of the name Farmville. It was originally called Newtown, but because the area was such a fanning community the name was eventually changed to Farmville. The meeting room tables were decorated with origami birds, an art of Japanese paper folding, in all colors on cards with the state re gent’s theme “Tying the Past to the Present is our Gift to the Future.” State Regent Carole Weiss brought greetings, ex- STAFF, SUBMITTED REPORTS Joint board to discuss Holmes’ future The Joint Board of Chowan County Commis sioners and Board of Edu cation Committee will meet at 9 am. Del egates at the 1920 North Carolina State Conference voted to divide the state so ciety into four geographic areas to be called districts. As the National Society ap proved new chapters, the number of districts ex panded until in 1967 there were nine districts. As a re sult of redistricting in 2014, there now are eight North Carolina districts encom passing 105 active chapters with a state-wide member ship of 7,515. The purpose of each district is to pro vide an avenue for chapter regents and members to network and to hold an an nual meeting once per year to present reports of dis trict and chapter work. Chapter, NSDAR has a long history of service to District VIII. Beginning in the 1960’s, Edenton Tea Party Chapter Charter Member Cornelia Jones Privott served as District VIII director from 1963-65. Margaret King Leeper also served as director from 1980-1982 with Pansy El liott as Secretary/Trea- surer from 1980-81. Former Edenton resident Dorothy Bangert was District VIII director from 1999-2002, followed by the Chowan County Public Safety Center, 305 W. Freemason St., Edenton. The office only will be open Monday. This course is required for individuals who are in terested in becoming a sub stitute teacher in the public schools.
