B6 THE CHOWAN HERALD, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27,2019 Schools S’More reading at D.F. Walker Elementary School School holds first Family Reading Night BY NICOLE BYRD-PHELPS For Chowan Herald With the opening of the Scholastic Book Fair the previous week, plus Book Character Day on Hal loween, the timing to em phasize the joy of reading was en pointe. While sign ing in, D. F. Walker Ele mentary School parents and students could hear Schroeder from the Peanuts gang tickling the ivories in the lobby. Schroeder (aka Nicole Byrd-Phelps) represented the book, It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! After a hot dog supper, students and parents jour neyed to three different “campsites” in the S’more Reading Compound for a read aloud. The third-grade site had comfy beanbag chairs and a simulated fire crackling in the back ground. Third-grade teacher Jennifer Hoggard was taking her turn read ing aloud A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee. As you can imagine, there was a lot of rhyming going on in that book. A neat shadow puppet activity was in cluded in this rotation. The fourth-grade site featured teachers Kristie Williams and Autumn Ginn toasting marshmallows outside the room while Jeanne Am brose was inside, reading aloud the book, Toasting Marshmallows. The stu dents present were sent off with a winter reading chal lenge, urging them to read 10 books in creative ways and to document their reading by writing it on a marshmallow template that will be glued to a hot chocolate template. When they read all 10 books, they can bring in the hot choco late template to exchange for D.F. Walker dollars. The fifth-grade site warned ev eryone not to feed the bears as you entered “the camp.” Fifth-grade teacher B.B. Halstead read aloud Don’t Feed The Bear to students and parents scat tered among desks and comfy furniture. The stu dents and parents also had a make-and-take memoiy game that focused on the good character traits em bedded in the story. The book fair was open for business that night and was included in the rotation of sites. Volunteers assisted media center coordinator Sarah Taylor in tallying up purchases and helping par ents and students find inter esting books and related items. The book fair was a big success, as usual. When students left the S’more Reading Camp, they had compiled the in gredients to make a s’more of their own. That was the reward for going to each rotation. What else would you expect at Camp SUBMITTED PHOTOS Parents and students at D.F. Walker get cozy around a fake camp fire during Family Reading Night.
