Stallings takes reins at town council Board votes for Elton Bond to serve as mayor pro tern BY NICOLE BOWMAN-LAYTON Editor Roland Vaughan presided over his last Edenton town council meeting as mayor on Dec. 10. It was as much of a goodbye to 24 years of service as it was a wel come to the new Edenton town council, as Jimmy Stallings took the oath of office as mayor. Incum bent Samuel “Sambo” Dixon took the oath of office as a councilor, as did newcomers Roger Coleman and Hackney High Jr. During the meeting Vaughan, PAGE A2 Edenton town council to help Colony Tire with latest expansion project. who wore a Carolina blue bow-tie with the Edenton seal on it, noted his family members who were in attendance for the momentous occasion. During his speech, Vaughan noted how Ecclesiastes 3 verses 1-8, known as “A Time for Every thing,” seemed fitting for this oc casion. “I added one more line: ‘A time to stay and a time to go,”’ he said with a laugh. Vaughan noted that he had no words that could adequately ex press the gratitude he has in serv ing as Edenton’s mayor. “It is because of the citizens of this community that we have enjoyed the successes,” he said. “Thank you all for your volunteer ism and your support of this coun cil over the years. Candlelight Tour Vaughan honored Receives Order of the Longleaf Pine during reception at CAC BY MILES LAYTON Staff writer Former Edenton Mayor Roland Vaughan has an extensive biog raphy - husband, father, grand father, business owner, banker, stock broker, jeweler and much more. His wife Peggy Anne, First Lady of Edenton, dropped off his resume so as to provide an 8 x 11 snapshot of his formidable ac complishments over the years. Well... Mr. Vaughan is going to need to update his bio - he has joined the Order of the Longleaf Pine. The Order of the Longleaf Pine is an honor granted by the State of North Carolina to individuals who have shown extraordinary service to the state. It is the highest award for state service granted by the Office of the Governor. The highest civil ian honor the state can bestow. The award recognizes outstand ing contributions to the state and nation in the areas literature, sci ence, the fine arts and public ser vice. After last Tuesday’s (Dec. 10) council meeting, Vaughan was presented the award by his good friend Hood Ellis, Town Attorney, at a large party held at the Chow an Arts Council’s studio on Water Street. Thousands visit town for tour While rain may have keep some people away Friday, Saturday evening’s sunny skies welcomed several thousand visitors to Eden ton for the Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes. As of about 4 p.m. Saturday, the Cupola House had about 600 visi tors during the weekend, accord ing to Gay McClelland, president of the Cupola House Association. The historical building on South Broad Street was decked out in holiday decor and offered visitors free cookies and wassail before and during the tour. McClelland, who wore a red and green 18th century gown qn Saturday, said she and Cupola House Docent Chris Grimes had their picture taken a lot. The vis itors ranged from people living here in Edenton to people from across the Atlantic Ocean. “One of our most special guests were a family of eight from Lis bon. They were so interested in our historic homes and the dec orations,” she said. “One woman told me she had been coming for See TOUR, A2 Murphy defends Trump Answers impeachment questions during open house BY MILES LAYTON Staff writer Third District Congressman Greg Murphy, R-Greenville, was surrounded by many local leaders that included many GOP torch bearers when he opened a district office Saturday in Edenton. Since it’s not everyday that a congressman " I comes to these , I paris and with an impeachment H'* brewing this I week in Washing- ton, DC, the Daily Advance asked its sister paper MURPHY the Chowan Her ¬ ald to talk to Mur phy, a conserva tive Republican. Being that it is the first district office opened in northeastern North Carolina in decades, Mur phy and others were in a jubilant mood. However, Murphy admitted that he was less than enthusiastic about answering questions formu lated by the Daily Advance. Rather than parse, trim or edit Murphy’s comments, the Chowan Herald chose to publish Murphy’s comments from Saturday’s inter view verbatim. The congressman did his duty to state his position on impeachment and defend President 'frump. Murphy said that Trump has “done nothing wrong.” First ques tion from the Daily Advance to Murphy was if it is OK for a pres ident to seek help from a foreign government in our elections and to use taxpayer-funded foreign aid and a Wlute House meeting as leverage to obtain that help?
