We are glad to note the improved condition of li. L. Cooper, who was recently hurt in Atlanta. ' The Scout for three months will only cost you 25 cents. Can yon afford to do without it ? We think not. To-morrow is the grand rally at the court house in the interest of a tobacco warehouse.. Let everv one attend. The new schedule on the R. & D. R'v is giving satisfadtion. Trains now depart at G a. m. and arrive at 6:15 p. m. E. W. Smith, chief engineer of the Western North Carolina branch of the Richmond & Danville, was in town last week. Capt. J. W. Tatham, of Valley town, had a heavy strok ot paralysis. Ilis condition, we are sorry to say, is extremely perilous. The interest in the prayer meet ing is increasing. Come out, friends, and spend one hour in prayer Wednesday night. And still they come! That's riacht, gentlemen, come right .along and subscribe for the best paper ever published inCherokee county. Church, South, convenes in Asheville to-morrow. We hope to , he able to give the ap pointments for the Franklin .Dis trict in our next issue. . The woods in the immediate vi cinity of Murphy were on fire Fri day night, and the mountains and hillsides presented a lurid and pic turesque sight one which .always charms and delights the stranger within our gates. Rev. J. S. Burnett, of . the M. E Church of Winston, N. C, preached in Murphy on last Thursday night. His discourse lasted about SO minutes, and his Leautiful flow of language and zeal for the Master held the audience profoundly attentive. Rev. Wm. Franklin, of the M. E. Church, who has charge of the Mur phy Circuit, will preach here in the Ti'ltjiAJVleThrh'- church"on the ' th Sunday in this month. Mr. Franklin is a young and earnest minister of the gospel, and will no doubt do splendid work in this county. There is no reason why any man should deprive his family of a good newspaper. They do not go out from home to learn the news, and a good paper serves to relieve some of the other wise lonely hours. It is the worst possible ecomony to de prive your family of a local news paper. Tins morning we were awakened by the welcome patter of rain, and, while the heavy clouds of yesterday betokened rain, yet we had hoped in vain for a refreshihg shower so long that we had about despaired. This is the first rain of any conse quence that has fallen here in six or eight weeks. J. L Smathers, the clever and ac commodating agent of the R. &. D. I?'y at Murphy, informs us that tickets to the amount of .$340.65 were sold to parties who attended Federal court at Asheville lJf week, besides there was a large number who walked. The Richmond & Danville makes a big scoop daring the semi-anaal ses sions of Federal court. - - T!i'e literary e :ercist:s of the Sons of Temperance last Friday night were highly entertaining and in structive, the participants acquitting themselves with honor. On next Fri day night an original essay will b read by Mrs. W. O. Patton, and L. E. Mauney will read a beautiful poem. We hope to see a large crowd pres ent at these exercises. On list Sunday morning at II o'clock Rev. J. O. Shelley preached his closing sermon for the conference year to a large concourse of anx ious hearers. He refused to sav farewell to a people whose kindness could never be forgotten. His burning words of truth made an , impression upon the church that veare will not obliterate. a The Entertainment Committee of the Sons of Temperance have de cided on presenting the drama, "The Temperance Doctor," and the langh able comedy, "Heads or Tails?" The cast of characters have been per fected, and the first" rehearsal will occur to-night at the 'Academy. Let each one be on hand promptly, and every member is expected to work for its success. It's really amusing to note the amazement and consternation de picted on tile usually serene physiog nomy of a -Aan who is a listener to a discussion jpfhe fashions by af quar tette of 1&W. Blackwell was inr town Wednesday, and informed a reporter of The Scout that he had located at elleview, this county. For the past year he has been engaged in the mer cantile business at Middlesborough, Ky., but that insatiable longing for old Cherokee took complete posses sion of him, with the above result. Mr. Blackwell also informed us that within the past ten days about $20, 000 worth of tobacco lands had been contracted and paid for wHhfh one ! ittiilii : of BcllevieW by .jart$es."from I Stokes county, N. Mrs. Woods, though a native of Tennessee, is well pleased with Western Carolina. J. M. Allen, who was shot four times at Atalla, Ala., on the 22nd of August, has been brought home by his father, J. K. Allen, of Beaverdam, and will soon be himself again. We hear some complaint of hogs dying with cholera in this county. The only way to prevent the spread of this disease is to keep those that look and are sick penned up sepa rately. ' ' ' The dry weather and the high wind of yesterday were propitious for increasing the fires that were raging in the mountains of this im mediate vicinity, but the welcome rain this morning nipped the fiery fiend before any serious damage was done. We quote from a letter to J. W. Thomas, of Brasstown, N. C, from A. B. Gorrell & Son, Winston, N. C. : "We were much pleased at the smoothness, texture and body of your tobacco. We feel satisfied you have got the land for rich waxy tobacco, which always brings the monevJ Brittaiu & Vaughn shipped a car load of cattle this morning to Vir ginia, in charge of A. M. .Brittain. It is the opinion of some that few beef cattle will be left in the county, unless there is a check in the ship ments. However, we do not fear a famine in this respect, especially if the cholera leaves any hogs in the country. Bead Our Story.
