There are those ? who would love for this part of the "tale to becdmc historic and noted for its supreme heights. beautiful *trean*. lovely flowers, clear sky, salubrious air and charming beauty. Gcd has lavished so much primeval beauty and grandeur amid there sup< ral height? we of one accord should combine our efort? to keep jt so. The woodman must lay down his axe. the pot hunter and fisher must set aside his gurf and rod. and all join with one accord not - to invade mm land or primitive! beauty except to admire and love' it; healed by breathing its bull sarnie odors, drink of its sparkling; fountain-*, and be soothed to re?t by 1 the song of birds and the mourn | of the winds. I have crossed the j continent twice, fished on the beach of the two great oceans and also* in the rockics, but give me the Big Smoky range for the outing and I am content. It is the hoate of the j black bear, deer and all similar I game found in the Appalachian . * chain ?f mountains. I have stood upon the summit of the tallest peak of the Great Smoky range ju-*t as the gates of day were opened and the first rays of the morning sun gilded these dizzy heights and looked far below when the early mountain streams covered the valleys beneath and was enchanted beyond description; it gave the beholder that ocean view' as the tops of many peaks along th?- border of tht. valley were jutting out, looking like so many islands in an emerald sea. And as the sun burnished this silvery to be dissipated by its srenial rays, j The most hallowed association of my I early life cluster around such scents' as this. I was horn anions the i hills of North Carolina and reared in the "hadow of some of these blue' peaks. 1 learned to love themj while younp. It is our duty to bep' the powers that be to spare the' savage hands of desecration in or-; der that those who come after us} may yet see how exquisitely beautiful God made this country before it was desecrated by man. West pf the French Broad River rises a cluster of the tallest peaks this side of the Rockies barring Mitch-: ell's lone peak. Commencing at! Paint Rock on the French Broad.; it extends to the Little Tennessee \ River west, a distance of seventy- j five miles, comprising: what is1 known as The Great Smoky Range. I On this great mountain trend there are sixty-four peaks, averaging six thousand feet, many of them even j more.
