Soybeans In Corn
Increased The Yield
Ralegh. N. C.. Oct. 26. 1927.?
Soybeans planted with corn ha? in
creased the yield per acre of the corn
in at least one instance in North Car
olina.
The demonstration was made by W.
M. Green of Troy in Montgomery
County. Mr. Green began a soil
building demonstration with county
agent O. K. Carrithers last spring. He
planned t?> build up his sc.il by in
cluding .soybeans with his corn >o that
the crop residues might be turned
under. X<> soybeans was planted in
part of the corn for purpose.* ?f com
parisons.
According t. K. C. Blair, ex'.en
- ?n agronomist. . * State <"? liege,
??.ho reported the demonstration,
where no soybeans were g:o\vn, Mr.
Green planted his corn in row.-, four
feet apart with the stalk- standing
30 inches apart in the row. In con
trast to this he planted the other
corn in rows six feet apart and 20
inches apart in the ri w. Then on
the same day. he planted O-tor -tan
soybeans between the rows of the
iatter corn. This ga\e the same
number of corn hills per acre whether
with or without soybans.
All the corn was fertilized alike.
This means that the corn and soy
beans received one-third more ferti
lizer an acre because the rows were |
closer together. The ccrn made good
growth under both conditions. The
soybeans grew from four to five feet j
high and spread enough to complete
ly cover the ground. After the corn
was ripe, says Mr. Blair, two rows
having soybeans between them were
gathered and weighed against three j
rews without the soybeans. The ]
yield per acre was 35 bushel of corn |
with the beans as compared to 25
bushels per acre without the bans.
Mr. Blair states that In adition to
the 10 bushels of corn gained per
acre, there will be added benefits in I
years to come due to the great
amount of legume vegetable matter
pliyed under this fall for soil im
provement.
