From the time when the an ?je|s' songs ?>f praise wen* wafted to i the Wandering shepherds on the Ju- 1 dean liill. Christmas has meant to ai wearv world wliat no other season means, for at no other season is there much inner consciousness of our universal brotherhood. The celebration of Christinas ante dates the birth of Christ, fori long before Jesus was born the an cients celebrated this time as the winter Solstice, the turning point of winter, pointing to spring. W hat more apt than that the Christm.oc uv?r!d should take over this pagan feast and spiritualize it into Christ mas, the birthday of the Son of God? The birth of the Ha!>e in the Manger meant thet breaking up of the bleak winter of tradition and darkness that was spread over the earth, and o*ci i the beginning of that springtime of love, joy, humility, "peace 011 earth and good will to men." From the < hiid whose eyes are bright with wonder and anticipation, to the weak and tottering figure of age standing on the brink <>f the Great Unknown: Christmas brings a realization of dreams and hopes. Christmas season is primarily a love season, when the heart rules the head, when animosities and wrongs are forgotten, and the divine spark within i:s glows to fervent heat with 1 cheer and good will The tentacles : of selfishness arc unloosed from the heart, and love sets un his throne 1 therein, purifying and strengthening! the citadel for the coming New Year. OUU.000 cans of processed ' foods are now put up in the United States every year, and most of them are consumed by the American people. Since the canning industry lias grown to such gigantic propor tions scientists have been working on every aspect of it, and commer cial canning has become a science. Scientists have not only done this, but they have delved into the in teresting past historv of canning. Dr. A. \V. Bitting, formerly asso ciate'! with the National Canners' Association laboratories at Wash ington. D. C . ha< collected all the r!ata on the subject available ? about 1200 volumes from the year 1500 to date, some of which were prepared from manuscripts nrior to the Christian era. In a ommunication quoted by "Wrangler" in the "Canning Trade" Dr. Bitting says in part: "I am convinced that Nicholas Appcrt was the man who discovered the art ot preserving food by treat ing the same with heat and holding it in a hermetically sealed container. I believe his title is as clear in this respect as "hat of Morse tor the tele graph, Sol) f<?r the telephone, or Edison for his numerous inventions.
