DEMAND FROM PEOPLE FOR EX TENSION WORK ! One of the great gratification of those connected with the Agricul tural Exetnsion Service in North Car olina has been the insistent demand on the part of the rural people for a! continuation of farm and home agent work during the present Crisis in the economic affairs of the State. This is an expresion from Dean I. O. Schaub, head of this service at State Cc liege. The Dean said all extension workers were willing to share the buTrden of hard times by having their salaries reduced tnd all of them have had decided reductions in their pay but they have been will ing to make any kind of sacrifice to see that the farm and home agent work is retained. In only a few counties have the political leaders seen fit to discontinue this service and in all instances, there has been a decided reaction on the part of tha people. One of the most touching things coming to Mr. Schaub's attention re cently was the action of a group of N'egrces from Wkyne county who I sent a delegation to the college re cently with a collection of $155 mostly in small change asking that he Negro home agent of that coun i ty be retained and pladging them i selves to pay the county's share of the expense. In Beaufort County, i the home demonstration club mem | bers have pledged themselves to con | tinue the work of Miss Violet Alex ! ander and in other counties similar steps are being taken by the people The Dean pointed out that the ef forts cf Agricultural Extension work ers are entirely unselfish. The home and farm agents, he said, are the con tacting mediums though which the; -latest facts about improved rural life reach the people. Hundreds of ooys and girls now on the farms can j not get jobs in the towns and cities as formerly and many city dwellers are returning to the soil making the need for extension work greater than ever.
