TIMELY FARM ?? ANSWERED AT STATE COLLEGE Question: How can I keep my turnips from freezing during the j winter? Answer: The outdoor hill or bank is probably the best system to ; use. Locate the hill on a well-drain ed piece of ground that is convient to the house or road. Put down a six inch layer of straw and arrange a ventilator to extend from the bot tom of the hill to a little above the top. Pile the turnips around this ventilator and cover with a six-inch layer of straw. Keep the ventilator open for the first week o*r ten days unless it is freezing weather. After this, if the weather is extremely cold, add a four-inch layer of sail. Question When is the best time to prune Muscadine erape vines? Leave in this solution until the treated part is thoroughly cool. The posts will be ready for setting. Question: How can 1 cure or pre serve beef for winter use? Ansmed: Con the brisket, navel, and rump and drf the rounds. Cut the meat to be corned into five or six pound chunks and rub mith salt. Pack in a clean vessel of hardwood or stone and cover with a brine n:ade of 1 xrt lbs. of salt, 1 oz. of saltpeter, % lb. of sugar or syrup and 1 gallon of water. The meat will cure inj about two weeks and can be used directly from the brine. Use the same pickle for rounds as for -orned beef but allow the piecse to stay in the brine about three days to each pound of weight. After taking from the brine the meat should be allowed to drip fro 24 hours, given a light smoke and hung to dry in a warm place. Question: Will it pay to put a mulch around my doses during the winter? Answer: This is a good practice where the tender varieties are grown. A winter mlch of stable manure containing a large amount of litter not only protects the crown of the plant and roots from winter injwfry but it also supplies a quantity of plant food that is gradually dis solved and absorbed by the soil. This plant food is readily available and stimulates vigorious growth in the spring. Question : Is it safe to sort po tatoes in storage and remove those that are diseased or rotting? Answer: No after potatoes are put in storage they should not be handlel until taken out for sale or consumption. Potatoe s are easily bruised and these bruised areas are very susceptible to rot and disease. When the potatoes are rotting, keep the tempatu're of he house around 85 degrees and the house well venti lated until the rotting potatoes dry up and then lower the tempature to 60 degrees.
