I 1UUI1M DUUllI To Be Set Up Here This Week Murphy's new, attractive tourist j booth has been completed and will be set up adjoining Sherrill's Servicenter on the Square this week. The white, frame, portable building is 10 feet high, nine feet long and six feet wide. Its construction was : made possible through the financial j cooperation of Murphy firms and inflividuals. It was sponsored by the Murphy Lions club and built by NY A students under the supervision of Reid Mallonee. NYA students will be maintained in it at all hours of the day and vcr.ing to give information to tourists. It will be located at various corners on the "Square" during the remainder of the summer. Miss Mary Jo Davis will be the manager. She will be assisted by Andrew KephartPlans for the building and weatherioarding were donated by Wade i Vlassey, local contractor. New Telephones To Be In Use On October 15 Arrangements for the formal inuiguration of Murphy'* new telephone system on October 15 arc swiftly drawing to completion here. The occasion marked the last picnic | meeting of the club at which Liontsses are quests for the summer season. Because of inclement weather the meeting was held in the dining room of the Methodist church. PresiJent Harve Elkins presided. At the opening of the business ses-j sion Mr. Eikins reported llitii. 122 inquiries concerning Murphy had been received as the result of a recent advertising program- Dr. E. E. Adams, secretary of the club, reported that the inquires were being answered individually. Mr. Elkins then reported that an attractive, portable tourist information booth was nearing completion ami would be placed on the Square in Murphy for the benefit of tourists in the next few days. The building is being constructed through publicsubscription funds by NY A workers who will be in charge of giving out information in the booth. .John Bagwell, -manager of the Murphy warehouse of the Farmers Federation here, was introduced to the club as a new member. Dr. Adams reported on recent efforts on the part of the club to have highway signs designating Murphy placed at Cleveland, Tenn., and at the Ocoee, Tenn., highway intersection. K. C. Wright reported on a movement recently to organi/.u Boy Scout troops in Cherokee, Clay and C?raharr. counties. A further report on a community I building and a new post, office was given by Dr. Adams. Many local Lions are planning to attend a club meeting in Robbinsville next Wednesday night and a Lions organization program at Canton Tuesday night, Sept. 27. Lion W. M- Fain announced that the MourVain Valley Mutual canning association located here would hold their frist annual picnic on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Hostesses for the occasion were: Mrs. W. Kirkland, an escapee convict from White county, Ga-, wh< was apprehended here last Friday morning hy policeman Neil Sneed was returned to Georgia authoritie Sunday night. Mr. Sneed arrestee! the man abou 2 a. m. Friday morning at Shield Service station. Accoring to Mr. Sneed, Kirklan escaped the chain gang on Februai 15, 1937. Two days before he wa captured here, Mr. Sneed saw Kirfc land's picture among: a collection o descriptions of refugees carried b Patrolman K. 15. Quinn, Jr. Mr. Sneed said Kirkland had one I lived here and he recognized the pit turc. When he saw him at the fil ing station he arrested him and not fied Georgia authorities. A . _ * 1 11 ion /Are neia Emmett Caddis, former deputy sheriff of Ducktown, Tenn., was shot and killed Wednesday evening about f>:30 o'clock in front of the Reynolds cafe in Ducktown. Sheriff Broughton Biggs has removed Frank Crawford and Frank | Clayton, deputies under Biggs both of Duckeovn, to the Benton, Tenn., jail where he is holding them until he "talks with several eye-witnesses to the shooting" before making any "definite statements** in the cane.
