( Sheriff Townson. ] When they came out, however, they ( found that Welch had undergone a miraculous recovery from his paralysis, and had disappeared. A jail inmate said he saw Welch leap out of r the bus and run down the road 'dike * a jack rabbit". That was about 7 o'clock last Mon- i day night. Shortly before midnight, , Policeman Neil Snood found him < rouching in the weeds back of Ivie's funeral home. Welch was captured after a short chase?and immediately became stricken with paralysis again: . He had to be lifted in and out of the . patrol wagon, and into his cell. Now he refuses to talk. He also 4 writes notes declaring he is stone deaf; but Chief Johnson says lhr-t he sneaked behind him and whispered "Look out he's going to shoot you" ?and that the "deaf" prisoner jumped three feet.
